Fodor's Expert Review Talisman Hotel de Charme

39 Shar'a Talaat Harb, Cairo, Cairo, 11111, Egypt Fodor's Choice

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

The approach through dusty alleyways and the climb through floors of nondescript grey offices could be a little off-putting, but any misgivings will go out the door as soon as you enter the inviting reception area. A one-floor bed-and-breakfast filled with antique furnishings, Egyptian art, and handwoven Persian carpets on traditional Cairene marble floors, this is an oasis of calm in the middle of Downtown. Rooms vary in size but are well furnished and brightly painted. Rooms are interspersed with Arabic-style lounges for relaxing.

PROS

  • Surrounding area has a range of inexpensive local cafés and bars, plus hundreds of shops
  • the design and decoration are excellent
  • well-stocked library

CONS

  • a small, old, and creaky elevator serves the whole building
  • no restaurant on-site and as such breakfast is minimal
  • no outside space. Street-facing rooms are noisier but get more light than those that face the back alley
