A little whimsy for today. Basel's Christmas market is internationally known, but another seasonal event enjoyed by the locals is the Harley Santas ride. Held annually on a Saturday in Advent, 'the motorcyclists elaborately decorate their Harleys and ride into the city as a group. They hand out presents on Marktplatz and then park up near the Hotel Basel, giving people a chance to look over the decorated bikes while the riders enjoy their own get-together. Fun for all!

Moravian stars are everywhere in holiday decorations these days but in the past they were mostly displayed only by Moravians or people in Saxony (the stars are made in Herrnhut, Germany, near Dresden; Herrnhut is also where the Moravian Church has its global headquarters). Moravian stars can very in size from tiny one strung together as Christmas tree lights to absolutely huge ones in churches that have to be professionally installed.

Actually, restaurants serving fondue don't need to advertise, most are fully booked already for the entire month. Our team tried to get a fondue dinner reservation at several restaurants in Basel; we got lucky because one restaurant just happened to get a cancellation 5 minutes before we called. It's easier to get a prime parking spot at the King of Prussia mall the week-end before Christmas!

FWIW, the food was delicious and it's an extensive menu with several choices for starter, main course, etc each night. Not like some hotels where there is just a limited selection when you take the half (or full) board option.
