I had read these names so many times while studying the route. Seeing these signages was a happy experience.

The entire route and the landscape around was extremely scenic via non toll road.

One cannot see much from the toll road as the barricade on the sides blocks much of the view. One doesn't get a feel of driving through the countryside.

Picturesque bridge, river, rock. Nice place to have a picnic. The color of the water is amazing and gives this area its name (Verdon Gorge).
The town, set on the banks of the emerald waters of the Verdon, only begins to appear when you get to the Pont du Roc bridge, built in the 15th century to replace an older one from the 9th and used by Napoleon in 1815 on his return from Elba.

Castellane is a very old city located upstream at the northern end of the Gorges of the Verdon in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Castellane was a lively and historic town at the crossroads of the Route Napoléon and the Upper Verdon. It nestles in a ravine in the Grand Canyon of Europe. At first, as you approach, you will see just its 184-metre high rocky peak with a chapel on top.

The tumultuous and intense history of Castellane dates back to the dawn of time. The town changed its name several times: the oppidum of Ducelia then Salinae in Romanesque times and Petra Castellana in VIIIth century.
In the middle Ages, the town set up definitely at the foot of a steep rock, on the right bank of the Verdon.
It’ was a real pleasure to go through the old gates to the town, and wander down the alleyways.
