The Hiroshima Peace Memorial, also known as the Atomic Bomb Dome or Genbaku Dome. It is one of the few structures that remained standing near the hypocenter of the atomic bomb explosion on August 6, 1945. Originally, this building was the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion - a multi-purpose exhibition center built to showcase local products and promote the region’s industrial development.

The bomb exploded almost directly above the building, about 2000’ in the air.

I remember this one’s name - the Golden Pavilion! That was the most unique and beautiful of the holy places. That’s all gold leaf! It was originally built a very long time ago, but like most wood buildings in Japan, it has burned down a couple of times, most recently in 1950. So this is a fairly recent re-creation of the original.

The temples and shrines do have beautiful gardens. The leaves were starting to turn. Missed them by a week.
