The Duomo di San Giorgio is the main church of Modica. It stands at the top of a 250-step staircase (see previous photo where I noted the bougainvillea). This is the Baroque interior.

My favorite, though, was the cave church of St. Nicolo Inferiore, Modica’s oldest church. It was carved in the rock in the 12th century and then built over after the earthquake in 1693. It was discovered in 1987 by a boy trying to retrieve a football. The Byzantine frescoes remain on the wall.

Next up: Santa Maria del Gesu, which partially survived the 1693 earthquake and is a prime example of 15th century architecture, with a notable cloister. It was unclear from our reading whether it was open or not. Of course, after climbing to the very top of town, we found that it is indeed (at least temporarily) closed.
