Entering the 'Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaarde' with its white-coloured house fronts and tranquil convent garden was founded in 1245. This little piece of world heritage was once the home of the beguines, emancipated lay-women who nevertheless led a pious and celibate life. For centuries, the Bruges beguinage has been inhabited continuously. Today, some nuns from the Order of Saint Benedict and Order of Vincent de Paul live there, as well as single women from Bruges.

This gentleman has been putting on free harp concerts for a long time. He builds and collects harps and played probably eight during the 40 minute performance, which was wonderful.

A rather impressive Catholic Church. We went inside and were treated to a men’s chorus rehearsal with organ accompaniment.

The Ghent Altarpiece, or ‘The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’ by the Van Eyck brothers, completed in 1432, is recognised worldwide as a great work of art, and one of the most influential paintings ever made. A total of 18 panels form a magical evocation of scenes from the Bible, as well as a portrait of the church warden, Joos Vijd, who commissioned the altarpiece, and his wife Elisabeth Borluut. In 1934, it was brazenly stolen. Eventually, all panels except one were recovered.

We ended up in a third floor Airbnb unit here, which wasn’t all bad. Especially considering there were four decadent chocolate shops in the immediate vicinity…
