Yosemite -driving from San Francisco

Some retired teachers who only have driven on the flat gulf coast and on city freeways are thinking about driving from San Francisco to Yosemite. I see that it takes around 4 to 5 hours or so. I am concerned about the roads. Are there steep or curved mountainous roads going there. We are wimps about the driving I know, but I get nervous about dropoffs etc.
Should we arrange a bus to get us there instead? I see that some go right to the park and stay at hotels there. We had hoped to go the middle of next May. Thanks for the info. Decb

The roads are completely safe and have guard rails. You should be fine. My family and I camp in Yosemite every year. This year we rented a 31' motorhome for the first time. I drove those roads in that behemoth without a problem.

You could always drive via 140 which is a gradual rise along the Merced River.

I didn't think the drive was too bad. There are quite a few turn-outs, so you can drive rather slowly if you wish and let the other cars pass at the next turn-out.

There are some pictures of Hwy 120 (the shortest route from San Francisco) posted here:
