Winery on the way from Carmel to San Francisco?

I will be in Carmel in January for a couple of days and then will be going to San Francisco for a few more days. Would like to visit at least one winery and was wondering if there was one on the way from Carmel to San Francisco. Also, didn't know what the closest winery to Carmel or Monterey was. Thanks for the info.

I would suggest the Bonny Doon Winery, off Highway 1 north of Santa Cruz. Beautiful setting and nice wines. More info and directions at www.bonnydoonwinery.com.

Okay, Forget the winery on the way to SF. Instead, go to Carmel Valley and enjoy their wonderful wineries. They are great and undiscovered. Talbots, etc.

From Carmel to San Francisco. Stop at the tiny lighthouse in Santa Cruz that houses the surfing museum and watch the surfers from the cliff there. Stop at Davenport and by a pastry at the bakery. All along route one. a great ride.

Tim - If you go out of Santa Cruz to San Jose on Rout 17 there are several wineries a few miles off the road near Los Gatos(Bear Creek Road exit)...also, Mirassou has a nice tasting room in San Jose. Not far from your route will be Ridge, a premium red wine house in Cupertino.

Just be sure to call ahead to any of the wineries in the Santa Cruz area. Many are not open on all weekends and few are open during the week. The wine, however, will rival the best of Napa! Ridge is great as is Bonny Doon, but I don't think either is open during the week. Also, in the city of Monterey just next to the Aquarium is the Monterey Co. Vintners tasting room-- on the second floor of the building--beautiful view of Monterey BAy and lots of the wines of the area to taste.A premier winery near Monterey is Chalone, but a bit of a drive.

If you can run over to the small airport there you will find a really good display set up on the various wineries in the area with info on the wines produced, location, etc. It is right in the main lobby so no security concerns, etc. Has some really good information, probably more than you will get at the TI center.
