They are all scenic in their own way.

Get a good guide book and read about all the major islands and pick one that appeals to you. Since you're flying to Maui, I'd stay there. There is plenty to do (or not).

Many of the Hawaiian beaches shown in movies/TV are on Kaua'i.

Be forwarned that Hawaiian beaches are not bright white like in the Caribbean and parts of Mexico and the water is not the crystal clear blue water one associates with the Caribbean. The beaches are simply fabulous and gorgeous however.

1st trip? I would stay on Maui the entire 10 days.

each island is plenty scenic, each in different ways. to me, Maui looks the most like hawaii in the movies.

i just returned from 7 days on Oahu, which was WAY too short a time & I was only in Waikiki!

IMHO, the most beautiful beach is Lanikai Beach in Kailua, Oahu. The water is clear, the sand very fine and soft (so fine, in fact, that it doesn't "dust off" as easily). There are no resorts nearby, so the beach is relatively empty.

I've always thought that Oahu had the best beaches of all the islands - Kailua Beach, Waikiki Beach (at one time, it must have been spactacular), the North Shore beaches, etc. The problem is that Oahu is also the most crowded island, so beaches that would otherwise be at the top of my list (like Hanauma Bay) are not worth visiting.

But so far, Lanikai has escaped that.

Which island is more beautiful is a matter of opinion. In ten days, I would probably also see Kauai or Oahu. They are all lovely!

Oahu and Maui are the most populated and Oahu is suppose to have the most beaches. Most movies have been filmed on Kauai and Oahu plus the tv show lost is taped on Oahu. The only active volcanoe above sea level in Hawaii is on the BI.
So there is an abundence of scenery and it is very easy to do 2 islands in 10 days another option would be day trips. Interisland airfare is pretty cheap right now and car rentals aren't to bad either.

Your in luck...because as a regular traveller to Oahu, this was precisely my quetion this year...and to answer it I split my 2 weeks between Waikiki and Maui.

In my humble opinion....Maui does not come close to the variety of scenery on Oahu.

I definately will not go back to Maui...but I would like to see what Kuai and the Big Island is like...but even after 5 years of travel to Oahu, the scenery around the island still holds me breathless.

Some of my friends who also travelled there, told me that I chose the wrong Island and said Kuai would have been better to go to...so I will do that next time for a few days to see if I like it.

Like other posters had said...many movies are shot in Oahu, most recently Blue Crush was shot on the North Shore which is simply beautiful.

Do not let the fact that Honolulu is a big city fool you into thinking you are staying in a metro area...absolutely not....when your on the beach it is like paradise.....and within 20 minutes drive you are in the middle of nowhere. We have been on plenty of beaches in Oahu where you may not see a single person the whole day!

MIne are Kauai then Maui, IMHO. I do agree with Suze on Maui for a first trip. I like Oahu and the Big Island also, but just are more partial to K & M.

If you already have tickets to Maui and have only 10 days, I would stay on Maui. I might stay in one area of the island for 5 days and another area for 5 days, because I like to soak in the atmosphere, not spend time driving or in airports.

Asking which island is most scenic is like asking a parent which child is their favorite---they are all beautiful.

Hey thanks a lot for all your views ,someone here mentioned kauai is very scenic which area would that be? north shore and the napali coast? If i had to chose between a helicopter ride from maui to bigisland volcanoes and kauai which would be a better option?

How important is seeing a live volcano to you? For some people that is the highlight of going to Hawaii. Others (me) have no particular interest. The islands I've chosen so far are Oahu (3s) and Maui (1x).

If you have 10 days it is very easy to move to one or even two islands...that is if you dont mind packing.

For the first time this year we decided to try another Island...that was Maui for 3 days....I cannot tell you how bored we were, and could not wait to get back to Oahu for the remainder of our vacation....so I would be careful about spending your 10 days on Maui if you are not sure which Island you like.

The cost of interisland flights is nominal.....Maui ---> Honolulu return is less than 60$ these days.

Only because I did not care for Maui, I would say try Kuai and Oahu. Friends of ours said they liked Kuai better than Maui...but hey had not been to Oahu so they had no comparison.

Bottom line...beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

If one finds Maui boring, don't go to Kaua'i! It's a real snoozer...

Hey Bill,

What about scenery? Is Kuai worth a day or two...or is it not much different then Muai?

I love it and think it is paradise, but if you were bored on Maui and disliked it as much as it sounds, I'd give Kaua'i a big pass and save it for us gluttons for punishment.

I don't believe you could see the northside of Kauai on anyother island. The wettest spot on earth is on Kauai but yet the west and south sides average only around 20 inches of rain per year. The beach landing in King Kong when Jessica Lange ran through the archway in the rock is on the Napali Coast.
Each island has it's own attractions and not everyone enjoys the same things. Waimea Canyon is often called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. The volcano on the BI was mentioned but not the green sand beach or the black sand beach at Punalu'u where sea turtles can be seen sunning.
You do not say when you are going but if around April 8 Easter Sunday the Merrie Monarch Festival begins on the BI. Tickets I have been told are hard to get but there many free events all week.

Mark99...it's spelled Kauai....and Bill is serious, Kauai is much more boring than Maui! Beautiful scenery can be found on every island, but it depends what else you are looking for in your vacation.
