Which hotel near theatre district for special occasion?

My husband and I will be going into the city on a Sunday in mid-July for a show and dinner and would like to stay at a nice hotel rather than driving back home to NJ. This is a special occasion and we would like to stay somewhere really nice but not outrageously expensive. We would like to stay near the theatre district if possible since we'll only be there for one night. Any suggestions?

didi, My husband and I try to do the same thing once a year (we're from NJ too). Last year we stayed at the Belvedere Hotel on 48th St (between 8th and 9th). Nice hotel. Not too expensive. Large room.

Le Parker Meridian. Just a few short blocks from Times Square located between 56th & 57th Streets and Sixth and Seventh Avenues.

I would suggest you go onto hotwire and pick Mid-town East, at least 4 stars; there are lots of good hotels in this area and category. We got the Barclay Intercontinental last Christmas this way, great hotel. The Waldorf also shows up in that category. Times Square area would be another good choice. As long as you go at least 4 stars, you will most likely be happy with what you get.

On hotwire or priceline you don't know which hotel you are getting unitl you make the confirmed booking. however there is a website called "biddingfortravel.com" that gives guidance as to how to make an informed guess as to which hotels hotwire and priceline are quoting, so you won't be picking blind. There is another site called "betterbidding.com" which offers a similar service to help you guess which hotels are being offered.

As you will be in on a Sunday night, you may get good deals just by contacting the hotels. Besides the Barlcay and the Waldorf, I think the Pennisula is a great hotel. You could also try the Plaza (a bit north of the theatre district). The Royalton in the east 40's is also nice, trendy, with a great bar.

To throw in a whole new suggestion, you might try the Ritz Carlton down in Battery Park. It is a great hotel with stunning veiws over the water. I think they offer very good weekend deals. They are far downtown, but is easily accessible to the Time Square area by subway in 20 minutes or so. You could leave your car at the ferry stop in Jersey City (Colgate pier) and take the ferry over and back to lower Manhattan, as it is not a far walk from the pier in lower Manhattan to the Ritz.

The Michelangelo. Small boutique hotel, room includes nice little continental breakfast, very large rooms and bathrooms, friendly staff. We walked to shows several times from there. Have fun!

I'd do the Marriott, which is in the heart of Times Square. There is a nice bar that revolves and you can sit, and relax and see the city go by.

The rooms at the Marriott are very nice and the views are terrific.

They were offering some good deals so you might try the (800) number or priceline and hotels.com and see if you can get a better price.

Have a great time.

The Muse, the Michelangelo, the City Club. Try looking on Quikbook.com for "deals"
