Where to go in the heat of summer?
I'm trying to pick a spot (in the US) for a short trip this summer for 2 adults. Nothing sounds that appealing, though, when I consider the temps everywhere mid-July.
I'd love some suggestions for places that we don't hear about everyday. Someplace that would be memorable and worthy of a few days' vacation time, but not necessarily places that would normally come to mind (and why it's a great place).
We would be driving from Dallas area or flying somewhere.
This is a broad request, but I'm thankful for anything you share!

San Francisco would do it, but be ready for cold, windy afternoons. Portland could be another choice--beautiful city, lots of great restaurants and hotels, gardens, architecture. A drive up the Columbia River Gorge and on up to Mt. Hood would be wonderful and the weather is mild at that time of year.

We've enjoyed Vail, Co, in July for several summers. You can fly nonstop from DFW to Denver fairly cheaply -- $225/ea -- and then drive I-70 to Vail which is a nice drive. Great eats and shopping in Vail and Beaver Creek. You can take a horseback ride and have views of Vail ski mountain and beautiful aspens, a day's cattle drive, canoe, kayak or go to one of several spas and be completely pampered. If golfing is your thing its gorgeous and with the high altitude, your drive will go yards and yards farther!

BeachGirl ~ That sounds really nice. I had thought about Colorado, but didn't know where to go/what to do.
San Fransisco is on the possibility list too.
Portland is not. We used to live in Seattle and LOVE the Pacific NW, but we'd rather go back with the whole family sometime to visit.
Great ideas. I'm hoping there are more!

We went to Glacier National Park in July. It was cool in the morning and evenings beautiful in the afternoon. Wonderful scenery you can take the jammer buses and let them do the driving. Stay at one of the lodges or in town.

Kayaking with the whales in the San Juans

I can't agree more with San Francisco, it is a great walkable city. Being from Texas myself, the weather will be a welcome change. If you go, Muir Woods is just north of SF and it is a park with redwoods and it is so beautiful. A little tricky to find the turn off but welll worth the trip.
Another place would be some of the towns in North Carolina. You can fly into Asheville and visit there or go into the higher elevations where it is cooler. I have always been fond of Blowing Rock and Boone. Again you will have really good temperatures.

Have you thought of the Great Lakes area? Northern Minnesota, Wisconsin & Michigan are great in mid-July. We have some friends who retired to the Keweenaw Penisula in Michigan after living in Lake Jackson, TX for over 20 years.

I would have no problems with SF, Seattle or Colorado, but I'd also definitely second Suzie's suggestion. We often escape the south Texas summer by going to the North Shore of Minn. We generally stay in the Grand Marais area. Scenery is gorgeous (think Maine coast line), prices are very reasonable, temperatures range from 50s at night to 60s-70s during the day, and there are lots of outdoor activities. We usually fly into MSP and rent a car, but you can also fly into Duluth.

When I think of summer visions of Cape Cod sand dunes and long stretches of pristine National Seashore beaches come to mind. The outer cape from Eastham to Provincetown has a wealth of activities and cultural events and the towns of Chatham and Provincetown are fun to visit. We like to stay at the only B+B that is actually in the National Park on Fort Hill. www.forthillbedandbreakfast Don't be fooled by all of the places that say they are in the National Seashore....they are not. They are in a town that has some land in the National Seashore but only Fort Hill B+B is actually in the Park. The land in the park is undeveloped and commercial lodging/development is not allowed. Fort Hill is the one exception because it is on the Historic Register and accepting guests into a home was a common thing to do there 100 years ago! Most of the lodging on the outer cape is on the busy road, Rt. 6. Here are some additional web sites to get you going.

Cape Cod sounds great. That's one spot we've both mentioned over the years, but I had forgotten about it. I'll have to do some $$ research.
I had never heard of the north shore area in Minn. That looks like a beautiful area. I think I'll keep it in mind for a future trip. Thanks!
