I knew some self-righteous pious female would come on and comment on my thread. How sad for me? I don't find pleasure in vacations where I'd spend my time having the locals beg for money and noticing that they are starving. You want to blow several hundred to a couple thousand on that you go right ahead.

I'd prefer not to go to h-ll

I know myself. I'm not cut out for high-risk travel, ie to countries w/political unrest or ultra-remote regions where one might consider riding in the back of a truck w/livestock but other than that, I'm pretty open to anything. (Let me qualify that--there are definately places I'd be more excited to go than others. I don't have a real desire to visit parts of Asia or India but if the opportunity arose, I'd rethink my position...) I'm not sure I'd be happy traveling if I was somewhere I couldn't take a shower everyday and be able to blowdry my hair. (If you ever saw my mop, you'd understand. LOL)

annesherrod (Hi!), my dentist has been to Siberia a number of times (on "dentists without borders" sort of trips) and says it is fantastic and the people are wonderful.

OWJ, so far in my travels in Asia I've been able to take a shower every day, and I expect the same in India as we appear to be staying in 4 or 5 star hotels. Unless you are in very remote areas or on a severe budget, there is usually no need to rough it in Asia. In fact, one of the attractions for many travelers is how much more luxury you can get for your dollar.

Hi Marilyn, just to let you know (just don't let OWG know I told you, LOL) OWJ has very beautiful hair - but that is a secret between you and me. We should all have a "mop" of hair like OWJ has. Now, OWJ, what do you have to say? Hugs to both of you.

Marilyn - Again what an exciting trip. To have the opportunity to learn more about India's culture and the fine arts is something I would really enjoy. I know you will come away with an appreciation for the country and the people because you are seeing more than just the tourist sites. I hope you will give us a trip report when you return.

Absolutely, paula. I will also do a website of the trip, like I did with my Oaxaca trip last Christmas.

Ilisa, my husband took a photo of the House of Abraham in Iraq while he was driving by on the highway. Amazing!

I also do not like to go anywhere where the locals beg for money/food. Due to health reasons, I also don't like to travel to places where there is no sanitation of food/water. A bacterial infection could literally kill me.

Marilyn--
Ya should just see the 'do w/the 100% humidity, especially today courtesy of Hurricane Dennis . Oy! LoveItaly usually knows what she's talking about but I have to strongly disagree w/her on this one ;-)

Anyway, I realized just how much I enjoy the conveniences of everyday life on a trip to I the Amazon 2yrs ago. We stayed in a 'resort'. (I use this term loosely.) We did have showers (cold) and electricity in our room (much needed a/c) but no outlets for appliances--thank goodness for baseball caps! I absolutely loved the opportunity to be there, to experience such an amazing place--and am soo glad I went--but after just 2 nights, I was ready for modern-day amenities. Yeah, I'm a wimp.

I have no doubt you and Phil Flash will have a trip of a lifetime. Like I said, if the opportunity arose to visit India (or Asia), I would definately consider it and knowing me, would probably go! Want some company while Flash is working?? I have tons of miles on Delta to burn. Hehehe

Have a most wonderful trip. If you blog or email while you're gone, I'd love to be added to your distro list. I would be very interested to read about your experiences and see some of Phil Flash's pics! LI has my email...

I have no desire to go on a cruise. Yes, I know everyone loves them. All my friends love them... I just have no desire to be surrounded by water and to have my time at various ports of call limited by the ship's schedule.

Good, fun question. (And I have no problem with it being pointless. This is the Internet, not grad school)
Answer: Nantuckett and places like it. I hate that mixture of "quaint" and money.

Time is limited, our years are limited, and money is limited for most.
Very few are lucky enough to accomplish even a small percentage of the countries/locations that exist in the world. A very high percentage of people never roam farther thsn 100 miles from their birthplace- before they die. So how can you censure anyone for being selective.

I have had the opportunity to go on trips that I said "never" in my mind to, like the Caribbean cruise, for instance- and there are always some nice surprises, I think- when you do that. Although because of the time, money limitations I now almost totally follow my instincts, as I know what I will like at least 90% of the time. If I won a trip to Hawaii or Thailand, I would go. If I don't, I won't.

One of the big surprises for me was Cozumel. I would return.

It's best to know yourself and use your money /time wisely, instead of going with what the fad or "times" deem is the most enlightening or beautiful place to see. I had a acquaintance in business who was greatly anticipating India- and then spent almost 2/3rds of the trip locking herself in various hotel rooms, as she could not stand the density, begging, smells in India.

I also would not travel to places that have so many prohibitions on women's dress, behaviors etc. nor ones where health issues are evident and you need multiple shot before leaving. Those things are not fun, I want to have fun on vacation. I've been sick enough in my life and suffered through the other enough to know, as well. No amount of beauty would encourage me to walk into
a furnace I've already experienced.

I don't want to go anywhere where I'll have to fear for my life.

So, anyplace in the middle of a war is out. If the country is into 'ethnic cleansing' I won't go because I doubt I'm of the right ethnic background.

Have to agree about going places where women have no rights. Why would I want to support that type of government?

Though I am interested in going to Cuba because I'm not allowing to go there as an American.

Stephanie, <I knew some self-righteous pious female would come on and comment on my thread>

Since I guess that is me you are referring to (although I'm not sure why you knew that it would be a female who would comment on your statements)...

I do not consider myself self-righteous or pious, but hopefully you understand that some times some people travel for reasons other than "vacations" and "pleasure" and to "escape reality". Some people have an interest in seeing the world.

Assuming that it isn't just a figment of Dante's imagination, I'd say Hell tops my list of places I'd like to avoid.

Anyplace that has bears...I'm afraid of them. And there's a joke:

Grizzly Bear Notice

In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear conflicts, the Montana Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert for bears while in the field.

We advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them.

We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear.

It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear dung.

Black bear dung is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear dung has little bells in it and smells like pepper.

Tiajuana Mexico has absoluetly no appeal for me. However I will have fun no matter where I go. So if I did go to Tiajuana I would make the best of it and find atleast one thing to enjoy.

Good grief, J Correa, I'm going there tomorrow!

Suze, well said. There can be a big difference between "taking a vacation" and "traveling." I do not fault people who want to get away and relax on a beach or a cruise. We've done it, but it doesn't happen to be what interests us the most about travel. It is the chance to see the world and other cultures, and we are willing to put up with a certain amount of inconvenience or physical discomfort to do so. I don't blame others if that's not what they want.

Thank you Marilyn. I enjoy both kinds of trips, relaxation vs more adventurous travel. But I would hate to eliminate anywhere that I couldn't drink the tap water, for example, because you start to make your world a *really* small place.
