What's the resort close to NYC ?
Recently when flying into JFK from the U.K, whilst flying down the Eastern Seaboard, approximately 10-15 minutes before landing,we flew over what appeared to be a seaside resort. There were large hotels that fronted onto the Atlantic and it all looked very beautiful.Any ideas what this area may have been and is it worth a visit on our next visit to NYC ?

Hmmmm. Flying in the U.K. means that the plane flies across the Atlantic to Canada and then south. So 15-20 minutes before JFK would be about 150-200 miles north of NYC - my best guess. Maybe this was Cape Cod? Or New Port Rhode Island? Both are very nice.

lizq's right--10-15 minutes by plane could be right outside of NYC (if plane was circling or taking a diffrent approach) or miles away (how far? well according to Lizq's calculations, the plane would have to be flying at a speed of 600 miles an hour to be 200 miles away at 20 minutes, which is about right for high altitude, but off base for being low enough to see the land in detail. Probably you could be taking about up to 100 miles away, mybe less)
I would guess that you might have actually been seeing high end, celebrity-owned private houses on the eastern edge of Long Island rather than hotels...

Guerneys Inn doesn't have such big hotel buildings and would not be that visible from the air. We have flown over by small plane and it blends in with the other buildings.
Could it have been Atlantic City? Or Coney Island? Both being Atlantic seashore, large hotels and shortly before JFK...I think

Simon,
I live on Long Island and fly pretty frequently to Europe on business.
Based on your observations, at ~15 minutes out, you're ~70 miles from JFK; looking at the east-end of Long Island, specifically an area collectively known as "The Hamptons". Some of what you saw may be hotels a bit further east of the Hamptons - see them many times coming into JFK. Others might be mansions in Southampton - they do look like hotels.
Is it worth a trip on your next visit? Yes...BUT, it can get very crowded, especially on the weekends.
Visit mid-June, 2004 and you can catch the US Open at Shinnecock Hill Golf Club , Southampton - a true links course you blokes are so fond of - that's if you can get tickets
