Whatever happened to the Kona Surf Hotel?

We stayed there a year and a half ago. I heard it closed. Will it reopen? Get torn down? I liked it because I could get preferred tee times at the Kona Country Club. Does anyone know other ways to get tee times there? Condos maybe? Do they still do the Manta Ray dives next to the hotel?

Mahalo John! Next time, please post all of your questions separately. This will give me the opportunity to promote...er...describe all the businesses for you in greater detail and give each one its own header! Mmmmmkay?

You're half right, the Kona Surf is half closed. They had a fire on the lower floor, but the second floor is still open and raring for business! (The fire marshal saw his way to keeping it open when his "Christmas Bonus" arrived from the local chamber of commerce.) They plan to renovate the second floor soon, but don't let that deter you....it's still a great place!

Whatever you do, don't contact the Kona Country Club directly about tee times. I'm sure they offer them, but you will be much happier if you obtain them by spending money at a place which offers tee times as bonuses. See, that way you get two good things for the price of one, like staying at a condo PLUS a tee time!

The Manta Ray dives are still going on, but the diving company is a new one, and they refuse to cough up the kickbacks...er....kickboards, that's it, kickboards for their guests, so I wouldn't recommend them.

Mahalo!

John, if you heard it from Lottie, she's just trying to fake you out and steer you to the Caribbean instead! She's a Caribbean travel agent and she'll do anything to steal business!

The Kona Surf is still open, just some slight smoke damage, but it's a beautiful property1 They are renovation it soon, but if you upgrade to the Presidential Suite it will smell a little better. Aloha!

John-Yes, the Kona Surf is closed and I have not heard anything about it being reopened. It closed the end of June and nothing has happened since. (At least I don't think so)

I don't know about the golf fees but you might want to try Keauhou Aston. They might do something since they are in the same vicinity. My husband calls and gets tee times all the time, even for the same day so I don't think it should be that big of a problem. He goes twilight though and gets the local rate.

Another helpful post from Kona Kim! What a gal! She sounds like a Hawaii resident who really just wants to help! If she lives in there though, why does know so much about all the hotels? Don't suggest it's her business to know, of course not! She just has lots of friends who happen to stay in every different hotel and they give her all the details.

She's not a TRAVEL AGENT.....or is she? Are you, kim? See if you can tell the truth.

Kim you are such a trouble maker! =)

Please xxx Kim is not a travel agent. She is a teacher. I teach with her at the same school. She told me about this site so I decided to come check it out.

I find it quite reasonable that someone who lives in the area would be knowledgeable about the hotels in town. Really....people who live here have tons of out of town guests and they stay at the hotels and condos. And...get this....some of us who live here in Hawaii actually stay at the hotels when there are functions and we don't want to have to worry about drinking and driving etc.

Get a clue-quit hiding behind your alias.

How convenient Miss Co-Worker, i.e. Kim!

Wow, you're just a walking, talking lucky star kind of gal to have just happened upon this site at the precipitous moment when old Kim needed you to defend her.

Friends like that should probably split commissions! Oh yeah, right, teacher, teacher....that's it, you're teachers! Or is that just you again Kim, you silly sausage!

Mr. Maui -

I loved the poster who stated that total jerks like you would rather be hated than ignored. How pathetic.

What is this formum's problem with travel agents? I am one myself and use the formum from time to gather information that I can't readily find in my travel guides or the internet. Nor is it possible for me to travel personally the world over. By the same token I have offered information (free of charge) using my real e-mail address and was lambasted and crucified for being a commercial opportunist and worst of all FOR BEING A TRAVEL AGENT! This is a good profession - many of us are professional, knowledgable and appreciated by our clients if not by the members of the Fodors chat room.

Thanks to those who responded. It was really the discount on the green fees that was the big benefit. Although the hotel wasn't that nice, the grounds were beautiful.
