What to do in Silicon Valley

I'd like to stroll around as many nice places in Silicon Valley as possible. Is there any organized tour or transportation system to go around? And do you have any recommendation other than high tech industries? I'm going to stay at San Jose or Palo Alto and have 2 free days. Thanks for your advice.

I can't say that there's much to do in the Silicon Valley. I'd head into San Francisco and enjoy a day in the city. As for things to do in San Jose and Palo Alto, run a search. There was a recent posting on this same issue.

Palo Alto is more of a "strolling around" town than San Jose. There's a very nice downtown with charming shops, galleries, and great restaurants. Also, it's within walking distance to Stanford University, which has very good campus tours and activites, and Stanford Shopping Center. It's also handy if you want to catch the train to San Francisco. On the other hand, San Jose does have the the Tech Museum, the Sharks, good local theater, and the downtown has been revitalized. San Jose is served by bus and light rail, which would get you around town and out to places like the Rosecrucian Musuem, Valley Fair Shopping Center, and the Winchester Mystery House.

If you visit the Stanford campus, don't miss the Cantor center for visual arts, re-opened in 1999 after renovation and expansion following earthquake damage.

Silicon Valley is pretty dull. San Jose is OK, but has a smallish downtown. Some good restaurants and the Tech museum. Small contemporary art museum, pretty St. Joseph's church. Palo Alto would be my choice (we live here). Other towns to visit that are nice are Saratoga and Los Gatos. Both have small downtowns in which to stroll. There is a light rail and Cal Train, but I think you'll find you want a car. Some wineries up in the Santa Cruz Mtns. and a very good outlet mall down in Gilroy just off the 101 if you're a shopper.

My hotel is in Sunnyvale - is that very far from San Fran? I'll get out of class at 4:30 every day.
