what to do close to las vegas-and how's Monte Carlo?
We'll be in Las Vegas in early February for 4 days. We've been there a few times and enjoy it for awhile but, just in case we tire of taking in the sights and we run out of gambling money, what would be good options for sight seeing if we rent a car for a day? We've been to Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon. Also, we've booked at Monte Carlo because we got a fairly good rate. Opinions on that?

Monte Carlo is fine. I've stayed at 5 different places in the last 7 or 8 years and I liked it very much. I did not like Flamingo or Treasure Island much as they were in very middle of the Strip and I found that it was way, way too crowded for my taste in that section. You are in a good location and Monte Carlo is underrated.

Starting with the closest to the farthest.
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is just outside of Las Vegas.

Valley of Fire State Park is about 50 miles from Las Vegas.

My favorite would be Zion National Park which is 160 miles (one way). This would be my choice but it will make for a long day to drive the round trip...but worth it!

I love Monte Carlo; I've stayed there more than any other hotel in Vegas. The casino is bright and airy and well laid out. A variety of convenient restaurants available - steak house and brew pub are good, and the coffee shop is quite satisfactory as well. (I think there are a couple of others which I haven't tried, as well as a food court.) The rooms are fine, clean, nicely decorated, reasonable size. It's not the Bellagio, I'm sure, but I find it quite satisfactory.
As far as side trips. Red Rock Canyon - fairly close trip. A little further - Valley of Fire State Park. Nice little hikes, and you get to see hieroglyphics/pictographs, or whatever it is they call them. Further still, but a great place - Zion National Park. It CAN be done in a day, but a bit of a haul.
