What's your favorite Hawaiian Island and Why?
I've never been to Hawaii. So, would like to see the standard things like Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head.
However, our family loves and is very interested in volcanoes (science project was done on the subject) and we'd like to do the volcano stuff on the Big Island.
Yet, so many people recommend Maui. What is there to do on Maui?

hmmmm, this subject has come up several times, so you may want to type "which island" in the search box and then hit "Hawaii." You will find many many many many threads that will help you.
The answer is: Big Island and Oahu.

You might want to check out my recent trip reports and pictures of Kauai and the Big Island. Those are the only two Hawaiian islands I've visited. I'm not the kind of guy who enjoys lounging on the beach; I put almost 1,000 miles on my rental car in two weeks on those islands. Enjoyed the Big Island very much, but I think it would be very hard to beat Kauai for natural beauty. The Na Pali cliffs (viewed from the Kalalau trail) and Waimea Canyon rival anything I've ever seen.

Oahu and Big Island is your choice (if you want to see active volcano plus Pearl harbor and Diamond head).
What's to do on Maui? Go up the crater of Haleakala for sunrise, drive the road to Hana, snorkeling, swimming, attend a Luau, visit Lahaina town, etc.

Got you beat songdoc: one year my girlfriend and I put 1,200 miles on our rental car staying on Maui for 10 days. LOL I like all the islands for different things and different reasons. For a first timer, Oahu is a must as far as I'm concerned. After a few trips, then it's time to seek the "off the beaten path" spots...but, I don't know how old you are either. I think that makes a difference in the kind of experience you are looking for. When I was in my teens and 20's I liked the "buzz" of Honolulu, the night life, the "guys" LOL. Now, 40 years later I like a few days in Honolulu and then I head for someplace quieter. Anyway, look for Hawaii in the search box and there are a zillion posts there.

Big Island is my favorite. So many things to see, and the volcano...awesome. Love Hilo, and the Tsunami Musuem of the Pacific. King Kamehameha statue at Kapaau.
Oahu has lots to offer also. Great first time island. However the beaches on the northshore are far less crowded that Waikiki.((i.e. Mokuleia Beach or the beach further to the west past the air field.))
check out www.hawaiiweb.com
www.adrhi.com((real estate site, but has good pics of beaches.))
Of course USS Arizona Memorial, and Punchbowl ( U.S. Cemetery of the Pacific) are great places to visit,if they fit your interest.
If your time frame allows it, you could do both Oahu, and the Big Island.
You can usually book your flights i.e
XXX-HNL going
KOA-XXX return
and the fare is about the same depending on the airmiles. Or book the whole trip XXX-HNL-KOA-XXX. Usually the HNL-KOA leg is only $50-$60 additional.
Also interisland flight:
Mesa Airlines started service June 6,2006...current fare HNL-KOA $39
Would also consider flying into Hilo and leaving at Kona.
Hawaii....it's all good!

The best island is the Big Island.
I have seen them all over twenty five years, and I like the diversity and raw experience of seeing nature up close and personal.
Beoynd that, a special Fodorite and all around great guy lives there, aka matnikstym, who has been a great contributor to this forum and always has terrific advice.
Lastly, the man can make a few drinks that make you forget your numerical age, okay? I felt 19 again, though I had to cover my ears to block the laughter from my other 2000 parts. J.
