Web Cams

I watch web cams located in places I am going to travel, plus in places I have fallen in love with upon visiting. Does anyone else do this?

There are some great ones in Alaska. I've been watching the ones in the Yellowstone area all summer.

Do you have favorites that you watch?

What fun, Faina! I will search for one and get back to you. In the meantime, maybe someone who knows more about those locations will post.

I watch them also. I also give the website of ones where I will be to friends and family and "schedule" a time when I will be "onscreen" to wave to everyone. I did it in Niagara Falls and actually had some strangers step up and wave with me. Of course, you have to be willing to look a bit strange, waving away at nothing...

San Francisco: http://www.sfgate.com/liveviews/

I'm sure there are more. We need to find one that shows close ups so Fodorites can wave to us!

NoName - yes, SF is on that website, but I can't figure out where it is.

BayouGal, yeah, the roof of CBS building, watch me falling off at midnight

No, seriously, I can go for example to the Fairmont, but how will I see the cam? Even how can I know where it is exactly? I'd love to greet you guys!

BayouGal, I love Google earth. Before I know it I have spent the entire afternoon looking at places around the world. The Pyramids are one of my favs.

I haven't gone to the pyramids YET. OMG, No Name, don't get me started . . . between Fodors and Google Earth, I may end up in divorce court!

"Why, honey, what's wrong with having pizza delivered for dinner 5 times a week?!"

I bet the webcam is on the roof of the Fairmont Faina..or at one of the windows that was the Crown Room at the very top of the hotel. I don't know what that space is used for now, perhaps meeting/conventions?

I noticed that the website BayouGal posted has a webcam on our Vaca Mts., which is just west of me. Not to interesting to look at but it did surprise me.

TV Stations WLS and WGN both have web cams in Chicago. I think WGN's isn't working right now. I think there's also one for the Trump Tower construction site but they may have shut it off.

Faina, just figure out what direction the cam is looking in and then wave in the opposite direction. I usually find an identifiable landmark (stopsign, bus stop, etc.) in the image and then use that to put me in the right place.

For some newbies and oldbies, it used to be a Fodor's tradition to go stand out in front of The Cat's Meow on Bourbon St in NOLA and wave.

Its where we first fell in love with ccolor.
