Washington, DC - Travel time to White House
My husband and I will be traveling to Washington, DC in the next few weeks. We have a tour scheduled for the White House for 8:30 on Friday morning. I know we will need to be there by at least 8. We will be staying in Alexandria near the King Street Metro stop. How long do I need to plan to get into the city on a Friday morning rush hour? What route/lines would be best to take this time of day?

Both the blue and yellow lines run through King St. Metro. I would take the blue line to Farragut West and walk from there. You can accomplish the same thing on a yellow line train to Farragut West but you will need to change trains (probably at L'Enfant Plaza). Metro has a good trip planner.
I think allowing 45 minutes would cover it, 20-25 min to get downtown and the remainder to do a 10-12 min walk with a little time for getting turned around.
Don't forget that the WH allows nothing to go in with you and there is no place to stash your stuff while on the tour. This question came up very recently.

The trip planner to which obxgirl refers can be found at the Metro website, www.wmata.com
Just enter your beginning and ending destinations and the trip planner will suggest a few routes and give you the travel time and fare. Be sure to add in the time you need to walk to the King Street Station and from your Metro stop to the White House.
Also, I would suggest that you have your farecard in hand BEFORE you begin this trip. Getting a farecard, especially for the first time, can be frustrating and time-consuming and you don't want to be trying to do that during rush hour.
Finally, be sure to stand on the right of the escalators and walk on the left!

From the WH Website
The closest Metrorail stations to the White House are Federal Triangle (blue and orange lines), Metro Center (blue, orange, and red lines) and McPherson Square (blue and orange lines). On-street parking is not available near the White House, and use of public transportation is strongly encouraged.
