Washington D.C. Accommodation

We're going to D.C. at the end of the month and would love some advice about hotels in the city. Ideally would like to pay no more than $120 per night. Any suggestions? What about neighborhoods? Where do you recommend staying? Ideally we'd prefer something central, within short distances of major sights, restaurants and nightlife.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated.
Thanks

There has been a lot of activity recently regarding this topic. I suggest you first do a search on this forum on Washington, DC and narrow down some possibilities first.

yeah, I think a search will turn up a lot, but if you really want to be close to nightlife, I'd suggest the Dupont Circle, Kalorama (just north of Dupont) or Woodley Park areas as the best. All of these are close to metro stops so you can get to museums, govt buildings, etc in minutes, but are in walkable neighborhoods with good restaurants and nightlife. There are two major hotels in Woodley Park, the Omni Shoreham and a Sheraton. Both their locations are superb (they're practically next to each other), but both are very large. The Omni was underoing a lot of renovation recently and so the hotel was not in as great a condition, lots of construction and noise around public rooms during daytime--if you inquire there, ask if renovation is still going on. Lots of people were still staying there, but rates should be cheaper because of that. Not sure about smaller hotels around Woodley Park, there might be some. Both Dupont Circle and Woodley are convenient to the Adams Morgan area, good for nightlife and restaurants.

Try 1-800-VISITDC. This reservation service often has excellent rates. We always stay at the Best Western New Hampshire Suites, it's walking distance to both Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom. The room is a small suite, and a large continental breakfast is included (cereal, pastry, bagels, fruit, etc.). We usually pay between $75-95, depending on the season.

I have stayed for conferences at both the Woodley Park Omni & Shoreham, really like their proximity to lots of great restaurants on Connecticut Ave (just one block over) and the Metro station. Wherever you stay, make sure it is within walking distance to a Metro stop, so you can park your car at the hotel & not worry about it until you leave. Also ask about parking at the hotel & if there is extra charge. There is extra charge at the 2 hotels I mentioned.
