If you have concerns about other foderits check out the announcement on the European site, some folks are checking in there.God bless America but I have to tell you I have friend that are of Arab and Indian (muslim last names)some with families got regular bomb threats the last time we had a world trade center bomb. I am not spouting politics here I just am afraid what will happen in the aftermath of this.

The news estimated 10,000 people in *each* tower. I can't even imagine the chaos, fear and anger.....

Please don't consider this a dumb question but I am sincerely curious as I have never travelled to New york: what all was housed in the WTC? Was it only offices or were there apartments, shops, etc. I echo the sentiment; my prayers go out to the US.

Mostly offices in the WTC. Also some restaurants, shops on lower floors, I believe. Also, of course, the observation decks on the top, which are big tourist attractions.
Most things in L.A. are closed today too. It is so very sad and so scary. My sister-in-law is in NYC in mid town Manhattan and trying to get out of NY and head back to Midwest but she can't get out of there. She has 3 co-workers with her and they hope to get out ASAP but doubt if they can til atleast tomorrow and are very afraid to fly. Think they will try to get home any other way. Any ideas???

Luise Sep 11th, 2001 09:43 AM

It was announced by Dan Rather that the Palestinians are in the streets dancing for joy and shooting off their guns. Is there any question who the enemy is?? One of their own was due to be sentenced tomorrow at the World Trade Center..

I have no idea as to casualties but my daughter-in-law was on the 49th floor of 1 WTC, the first tower that was hit. She told me that many people were evacuating the building minutes after the plane hit.
She said it took her less than 15 minutes to get out of the building so there is a very good chance that people below where the plane hit (heard it was around the 80th floor) were out of the building when it collapsed.

From an English Fodorite, I send out my heartfelt sympathy and good wishes to the friends and families of those killed and injured in the cowardly and despicable attack on innocent people.
I hope that the American response is quick and effective.

Hey Now Sep 11th, 2001 10:07 AM

Canadian borders closed earlier, too.

Prayers for all however this turns out. It's an attack against the world, not just U.S.

Luise, don't judge until the facts come out. Palestinians danced when Oklahoma City was felled, too. And look who the bomber was... a disgruntled American. An Israeli killed the Israeli president a few years ago.

Arabella Sep 11th, 2001 10:08 AM

Luise, I didn't know about that. What do you mean by "One of their own was due to be sentenced tomorrow at the World Trade Center"?
queenvee Sep 11th, 2001 10:20 AM

I'm just outside NYC, so am getting NYC news reports...both WTC towers housed about 50,000 employees...official estimates are at least 10,000 deaths in NYC. The person Luis mentioned is one of the Osama bin Laden followers who was found guilty in the US embassy bombing in Kenya was scheduled to be sentenced tomorrow in the US Federal Court which is across the street from the WTC. No word yet whether the sentencing will go on as scheduled.

I know I'm coming on late but has anybody heard from "lisa" and "ilisa" and "leone" from the DC area?
Thx,
Kal

Arabella Sep 11th, 2001 10:48 AM

No word from Leone.

Cass Sep 11th, 2001 10:49 AM

This is a day that will live "in infamy" as worse, even than Pearl Harbor. I doubt if any single day in any war will have seen as many deaths, and these were largely civilians.

We are at war. War should be declared. But who are the enemy and where do we find them?

Toni Sep 11th, 2001 10:54 AM

From what I understand Osoma Bin Ladan has been harbored and protected by Afghanistan. Three weeks ago he stated that there would be an unpresedented attack upon the U.S. We threatened Afghanistan that they would be held responsible if there were any incidents...The news just reported that one of the first steps by the FBI is going to be checking airline passenger lists.
A very very sad day for America.

Emmy Sep 11th, 2001 11:02 AM
