Two 22 year olds want to know some cool things to do on a student's budget

This is the first time me and my girlfriend will be up in NYC being over 21 so we want to go out every night but not sure where to go. We're staying at the Milford Plaza Hotel right in Times Square so we need possibly some places in or around there that won't charge us $10 for a draft. If any has any ideas it would be appreciated.

You may want to repost with NYC in the title of your question, you may get more responses.

You won't have a probelem finding a draft under $10, most are $7.

In my experience, the most reasonably priced drinks in Manhattan are found at Irish Pubs, especially the smaller ones. I don't recall names, they have probably tunred over, but they typically supply good beer for a fair price.

I recommend checking out www.murphguide.com. You can see what bars have specials/happy hour on what nights. Being in your 20's 2nd ave is a good place to hang out (ton of bars with people looking to party). Calico Jacks and McFaddens are on 2nd b/w 42nd and 43rd can be fun (usually have some type of special) and if you go up a couple of blocks into the 50s there are a lot more bars. I agree with the irish pub response, you will def find better prices in the smaller local bars then you will in Hard Rock or ESPN Zone. Plus they give you the real feel of New York. Have a good time.

I agree with the area sjwoodys recommended. My husband had a corporate apt between 1st & 2nd near 55th, and all along 2nd ave down to the 40's there were a lot of reasonable bars with happy hour specials, and not all were Irish pubs. Also, check Citysearch for places that will let you BYOB to dinner. Good luck!

Here is a list of “dive bars” in NYC http://tinyurl.com/2y9pjg Or like the previous poster said – look for a shamrock on the sign!

You can also go to the Peculiar Pub in the Village (I love that place). And just recently I went to the St. Mark’s Ale House and that was a good crowd with decent prices. Great music, too. For extra cheep, excellent food look up Benny’s Burritos.

IMO if this were my first time in NYC being over 21 I wouldn't limit myself to the area around Times Square. You're going to find the places that will be the most fun, interesting and cheap in other neighborhoods.

Some "cheap" but fun 20 something bars are Brother Jimmy's on the upper east side, Hogs & Heifers is an experience, etc. = all not in Times Square.

Also 20 something you might want to check out the bars around NYU and downtown in the East Village like Off the Wagon and others.

These are standard mainstays and not the hippest clubs (you'll have to ask another fodorite for that I'm too old).

For cheap beer and free hot dogs (yes, really!) in the Times Square area, check out Rudy's- you'll recognize it by the gigantic pig in the front! It's definitely a dive bar, but it can be fun.

Outside the area, definitely visit Corner Bistro in the West Village. The beers on tap are around $3, and it's known for having some of the best burgers in the city (and there's a good grilled cheese too!).

In the Union Square area, visit Old Town Bar. It's a beautiful, "old New York" style place, with a bar downstairs and table service upstairs. Also great burgers and grilled cheese (I don't eat meat, but my husband does!)

Also- are you interested in seeing a show? Many Broadway shows have a student rush ticket for around $25. I particularly recommend Spring Awakening, a new show with incredible music. This site has details about all of the rush policies:

The bar "Garvey's" is in my hotel (Milford Plaza) and it says that the neighborhood is Hell's Kitchen...what is the area that constitutes Hell's Kitchen or is this description of it's area incorrect. I'm not from around NYC but I feel like Hell's Kitchen isn't the proper identification of that area since it's so close to Times Square...

Absolutely go to St. Mark's Place and the lower east side. Also, south of Washington Square Park around the NYU campus has very reasonable pubs.

Is St. Mark's Place the name of the bar or the area where there are cool bars?

Please Please treat yourself to a Sabretts hot dog or two--with relish and all!!! We left NY 8 years ago and I have to order them via airmail to fix the "need"-- also do White Castle- I know I know!! people rollin' eyes... but nothing beats a Whitecastle after hitting a few pubs!!!!! but both are food within budget and easy to get too.

St. Marks Place is a street. It is 8th or 9th (i always forget) between 2nd & 3rd Avenues. There is a great Afghanastan restaurant - Khyber Pass.

The St. Mark’s Ale House is on St. Mark’s Place. You’ll want to spend some time looking around that area for sure! Bleecker and McDougal also great streets. Mamoun’s (on Bleecker) is a great place to grab a bite and practice eating in the street. www.newyork.citysearch.com can give you a lot of info.

Go West. Literally. The further west you go the cheaper the beer. I can't remember if it is Ninth or Tenth Avenues but we found a slew of bars where bottled beer was around $3-$3.50.

St. Mark's Place is 8th Street east of Astor Place ... walk it and find tons of great drinking establishments, then turn left (north) on Avenue A for more.

(Hi-Fi on A has the best jukebox in NYC ... custom-made, the owner's eclectic selection)

I don't know what you want to pay for dinners, but here area a few places my daughter eats at that seh considers 'reasonable' but what is reasonable to some isn't to another, but you can look them up on the web, or menupages, etc to see their menu and prices:
Via della Pace: 48 E 7th (at 7th and 2nd) - italian, reasonable prices
S.E.A. - 2nd between 4th & 5th: super cheap, good and fast, thai food - but it can take a while to get a table but it's quick eating
Boca Chica: 1st and 1st - cuban/spanish flair - quesedilla, enchilada, rice, beans, some good seafood, etc

Also, is Stromboli at St Marks and 1st which is great for a late night slice of pizza b/c it is open until somewwhere around 4am I think

there is also Crif Dogs - on st Marks between 1st and A - hot dogs with every kind of topping you can imagine, which is kind of fun -dogs w/ bacon, avocado, egg creams, tater tots, chili dogs, things you'd never imagine - and it is open I think also till somewhere around 4am - , but defnitely into the wee hours as many things are in this area b/c of the college kids - I'm not saying the hot dogs are the best in the city, but it's open late and after partying if you are near there and hungry it might work. I like Papaya King for cheap too, but everyone has great places they love for 'dogs' in the city -

You can also look at this menu andprices on line, it isn't the cheapest place to eat breakfast, etc but it is open all night long and it isn't a far walk to your hotel, so I mention it in case you have the need for food and coffee at 3am - it's called Maison and it's at 1700 Broadway at 53rd

and if you like cupcakes nad you are near Bleeker Street, there is Magnolia Cupcakes on 401 Bleeker, you can also check their times on the web, but they are often open until 11:30 or midnight and have great cupcakes -

I don't remember what they charge for beer, but you might like McSorley's - you can look it up and read some reviews - it can be a fun place -

If you go walking thru the Soho area, which has some cute shops/places to eat/ there is a marketplace / craft/ jewelry/clothes on weekends at St. Patricks youth Center on 286 Mulberry St at Prince that is fun to walk through with booths of jewelers/crafters, bags, t shirts, etc. you can often find something fun and different there w/out breaking the bank.

If it's your first time, do the free stuff - walk Central Park (you can get a map on line centralpark.com), go to Rockefeller Ctr, St. Patrick's cathedral, walk Madison and 5th, as well as get down to east/west village or soho/nolita - and get out of Times Sq.
