Top 5 in NYC?

I am going to be in New York with wife and children next week for 3 days only. What would be the top 5 (or more) of must do sights and activities? Thanks!

Glen,
1. Circle Line boat tour around Manhattan Island or Staten Island Ferry. (The latter is free!)
2. Museum of Natural History - kids will be delighted.
3. Chinatown - unless you're from San Francisco.
4. Times Square at night. (It's safe now.)
5. Try to get discount tickets to a musical or comedy on Broadway. (Don't even THINK about Lion King. If not, look into Off-Broadway theatre in Greenwich Village. The Village itself is theatre of a sort.

While you're in New York City, seeing a broadway musical is a must. I agree with the above message that Times Square at night is something you definitely need to do, it's one of my favorite places in the U.S. Also add going to the top of the Empire State Building at night to your list. The view on a clear night is one you will not soon forget. Have fun!

Glen, I cannot fault either of the above lists, but will add my own five best things to do in New York City:
1. The Metropolitan Museum of Art (5th Ave. at 83rd St.) -- You don't have to be an art expert to recognize this as one of the great museums of the world.
2. Ellis Island (by boat from Battery Park) -- a beautiful restoration of the gateway to America for 20 million immigrants.
3. Floor of the New York Stock Exchange (Wall and Broad Sts., lower Manhattan) -- see capitalism at work.
4. Rockefeller Center (48-51 Sts. - 5th to 6th Ave.) -- perhaps the finest urban architecture in America.
5. A New York Yankees game (The Bronx) -- this may be the best baseball team since the '61 Bombers. They're playing .750 ball; incredibly, Yankee Stadium never comes even close to selling out.
Enjoy your visit and sorting out the choices.

First of all, how old are your children? If they are teens, shop in the West Village or just walk around the area, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, FAO Schwartz Toy Store on 59th and Madison? (for all ages, a Broadway Show ("Rent" for teens), Serendipity's for ice cream (61st and second), Stock Exchange, World Trade Center, and visit www.nycvisit.com/restaurant-list.hmtl for a list of fabulous restaurants offering a prix fixe dinner of $19.98(favorite Aureole, Allisons, Chanterelle).
Enjoy,
Denise

WOW, only five items! Kids ages would help, but let's do it by five areas of NYC.

1. Forget Empire State Building, instead go to the World Trade Center observation deck. There's one inside and another outside. (Around the corner is Trinity Church with an interesting cemetry. You'll find graves of Robert Fulton and Alexander Hamilton.)

2. From the World Trade Center, walk to Battery Park (where you'll often find street entertainers) and hop on the Staten Island ferry. Take the trip both ways. You will pass the Statue of Liberty, see Ellis Island from a distance, and get a great view of Manhattan Island. It won't put a dent in your pocket.

3. Take Broadway bus to 42nd Street - you're on the Great White Way. Walk up Broadway to ticket booth (approx. 46th St.) to get tickets for sameday play at discount based on availability. (you'll want to come back at night to see the exciting change in this area.)

4. Rockerfeller Center at 49th between Avenue of the Americas and Fifth Avenue. . . . the displays, people, shops. Walk to Fifth Avenue, cross to other side and you're at St. Patrick's Cathedral. Walk north on same side of street to FAO Schwarz. You're kids will love this super toy store and so will you.

5. Assuming you have tickets for a play, have a relaxing dinner prior. Choices are endless. I like to get away from the theatre district and prefer a small neighborhood restaurant on the east side. There are always lots of choices. Check the Zagat survey.

6. Museum of Natural History, depends on ages of children. Circle Line Cruise around the island is a great overview. IMAX theatre (Broadway and 69th), if you don't have one in your area of the country.

. . . . and on and on it goes. Contact me directly if you wish to provide more detailed info and ask questions. Have a wonderful visit to my favorite city.
