Teton Village Or Town of Jackson?

I Know I may be a little early to ask about this January trip, but I need a lot of advice in order to organize it, everything about it is very new. My family and I live in Brazil, no snow. Except for my 16 year old son, we have already skied very little in the past. Our main interest is: snow, nature, wild life, and perhaps try to learn a little of cross-country ski, and perhaps snowshoe.
First doubt:WHERE to stay: Teton Village close to the slopes, or town of Jackson, where the restaurants, shops and everything is, and go back and forth every day to the ski area?
Please, remember that EVERYTHING in this area is TOTALLY different to us, the snow, the cowboy town, etc.
Please help me choose the rihgt place to stay.
Any information you give me will be more than welcome.
THANKS.

If you are renting a car, either is fine - just different.

We stayed at Teton Village last summer. They are very nice condos, with several bedrooms, a full kitchen, several bathrooms. We even saw a large moose eating the landscaping outside our window. It is at the base of a mountain and there is a tram right there to take you to the top. There are also several restaurants on the property. There are even ski storage lockers on the first floor of each building. There are fireplaces and the views are quite nice.

But you would not want to spend all you time there - and ytou would need a car to get into Jackson, where there are more restaurants, stores, etc.

For us, a family with 2 teenagers, we like the added space of renting a condo. It gives us space to spread out and we can make coffee, pack a lunch, and are not forced to eat every meal out in a restaurant.

Have a great trip - Brazil sounds nice about now since it is well below freezing where I am in Boston now.

I stayed in town as well as at Teton Village. There's a new Four Seasons at TV and Snake River Lodge and Spa is very nice.

The Rusty Parrot Lodge in downtown Jackson is one of the best in the U. S. If I went back I would stay at RPL.

Food and shopping is better in town and you can drive to TV if you want to ski. Renting a condo is another good idea if you want to eat in your room and be close to the slopes. If I was coming from Brazil to the U. S. to ski I would go to Colorado. There are some great places in CO much nicer than Jackson such as Aspen, Snowmass, Telluride, Vail and Steamboat Springs. Good luck. Have a safe trip.

Hello Lery,

I'm interested why you are choosing Jackson Hole if you are not experienced skiers? Jackson is not the easiest ski area in the US to get to, January can be EXTREMELY cold, and the mountain is known for its difficult terrain. Jackson Hole does have a good beginner's area and an excellent ski school, but the majority of the mountain is very difficult - very steep.

If you are choosing Jackson Hole (Teton Village) for the experience of the "cowboy" town of Jackson, it's a very fun town with lots of excellent restaurants, incredible art galleries. If you do go there, you MUST do a trip into Yellowstone National Park where you will be able to enjoy the wildlife and geysers. Like nowhere else on earth!

If you don't plan to visit Yellowstone as part of this trip, I would honestly recommend another area, either somewhere in Colorado or Utah. Nicer weather, easier to get to, better learning climate for beginners.

Good luck!

Dayle's right Lery. Jackson is a difficult place to get to. The Jackson
Airport is very small and about 20 miles from town. It probably has limited daily flights also and my experience was not good leaving the a/p due to a lot of security, lots of people, slow lines, etc. I have been to CO 12/13 times and I think the best area is Aspen or Vail. You can fly into Denver very easily from Brazil as Denver a/p is huge and has unlimited flights from all over. You can rent a car and easily drive right out of town on the Interstate to Vail or on to Aspen. Both places have unlimited hotels, condo's, restaurants and good shopping all near the slopes. Unless you stayed at TV in WY you would have some problems getting to the ski slopes and Dayle says they are not easy. CO has some nice beginners slopes at Vail, Beaver Creek and Snowmass. Aspen is a world class city also. I have heard a lot of good things about Telluride but I have not been there. It's not nearly as easy to get to as Vail, BC or Aspen.

Another fine choice would be Whistler which is the top ski resort in North America. I was there last February at The Four Season which is right at the base of the mountain and adjacent to ski lifts. I thought the food at Whistler was the best I ever had. You fly into Vancouver and drive an hour north of town. All the hotels, resorts, condo's, restaurants and great shopping are right there at the base of the mountain in one central location.

I would be happy to help you with CO or Whistler if you desire. You can email me at tripperattecinfodotcom if you please. Good luck.
