Telluride vs. Aspen??

We are planning our first ski trip to the west sometime this winter. We have only skiied in the east(ice) and are looking forward to something different. We want skiing, cool atmosphere, wonderful food, and some neat shopping. We have narrowed our choices to Aspen and Telluride(more specifically, Little Nell,St. Regis, or Inn at Lost Creek or the Peaks)Its just the two of us..no kids this trip. Thanks for any ideas!!

Telluride is a relatively small area (1700 acres), and although Aspen Mountain itself is smaller, there are four ski areas (Aspen Mt, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass) within just a few minutes, and a good transportation system connecting them.

If you like more variety in your skiing, Aspen would be a better choice. Aspen is also a little bit lower, if altitude is a problem for you.

Hey Blair:

Aspen has it all!
Sounds like you can afford to really enjoy Aspen if yout looking at Lil Nell

The town is classic
The slopes are wonderful
No other area has all the amenities that Aspen offers
No Kids....even better in Aspen!

Yes..Im sure we would like variety in our skiing....when we become great skiiers!!We are ok but I was afraid Aspen might be too difficult ...I have heard Telluride is better for middle range/beginner skiing. Also we want somewhere that is not too spread out....any thoughts??

Blair9535, you've been mis-informed. When you purchase a lift ticket from the Aspen Ski Company, you have access to four seperate (and large) mountains. The biggest with the most variety including many intermediate runs (some more challenging than others) is Snowmass. You can ski all week there and never get tired of it.

I have been skiing for many years and I want to give you a warning. If you or anyone in your family is a beginner, many of the trails that are suited for beginners on most mountains are more like "catwalks" and do not provide an ideal terrain for beginners. Now I've never skied Telluride, but another mountain (yes, a whole mountain) geared for beginners as well as light-intermediate skiiers is Buttermilk, which you get access to with an Aspen Ski Company lift ticket.

Aspen Mountain (called Ajax) is indeed an advanced mountain, but you don't need to ski it. Go to Aspen and enjoy all the atmosphere, food and shopping you are looking for, and don't let anyone freak you out...there is plenty of skiing for all abilities.

By the way, at Aspen (includig all the mountains), you can store your skis overnight so you don't have to carry them back and forth. If you feel like changing mountains the next day, the ski company will send them over for a nominal fee and they will be waiting for you when you arrive first thing in the morning.

This is just hearsay, since I no longer downhill ski, but I hear that Telluride isn't so great for intermediate skiing. I also doubt it would be as good as Aspen for shopping. If you want spectacular scenery and more advanced skiing, as well as a somewhat quirky atmosphere, then Telluride is a great choice. I also think of Telluride as a great place for couples, as opposed to families.

Thanks everyone for your insight..Im still undecided even though Aspen was my first choice all along.Telluride just seemed easier because it seemed more compact, easier to get around and maybe more romantic. We are considering getting married on this trip so a bit of atmosphere would be ok I guess....even though Im not really into overly romantic cheesy stuff..lol.As long as I can have great snow, great sheets, and a warm fire Im good. Thanks!

Blair,
Where did you go? Telluride is my fave ski resort (summer too) and more intimate and romantic than Aspen. However I also love Aspen. Just curious!
