Reasonable prices, of course.

Are you staying at Rockerfeller Center? There's an H&M around the corner on 5th & 54th(?) maybe 55th. H&M is only in Europe and NYC, and really cheap, so they should like it. You might like it too, there are tons of cute accessories for really cheap. I bought some funky cufflinks for $3. You could spend all day in there.

H&M is indeed a great idea, but there are stores outside NY and Europe. Waterbury, CT and Springfield, MA come to mind.

St. Mark's Place - take the 6 to Astor Place and head east a couple blocks. Trash & Vaudeville is popular and there are some others on St Marks. SOHO is also great to stop at the little shops here and there but not cheap. You are kinda asking for an oxymoron - cheap trendy clothes...

H&M! Definitely. It carries very trendy, "european" clothes at bargain prices. It is located at 51st and 5th Ave -- you can't miss it if you are near St. Patrick's or Rockefeller Center (one block east of the Hilton). Also, not sure if you have Sephora in Pittsburgh or not, but it is just down the street from H&M and is a HUGE cosmetics store with everything. My teenage nieces love it!

Another thought might be lower Broadway. SoHo will be very expensive boutiques, but lower Broadway (Broadway near Spring, for example), will have lots of jeans stores, Anthropologie (which has lots of cool stuff that teenagers will like), and then lots of chain stores (banana republic, etc) that you are likely to have in Pittsburgh.

H&M is good for the designer looks and more European styling, "cool" definitely. But Also-for teenagers or the very young at heart-the East Village/so many clothing stores that teen girls would love..All the peasant tops that are popular now, great jeans and beads, there are good Vintage clothing places in the Village, stuff can go for a few dollars to hundreds...Have a great time~Don't forget to get the knock off bags,Burberry hats and scarves in the area ...Happy SHopping~

You definitely want to go to Canal Jeans in SoHo. It's at 504 Broadway between Spring & Broome Street. Their website is www.canaljean.com Their website will tell you the hours they are open and directions on how to get there.

not to beat a dead horse, but traveller needs to get out of Manhattan("only in NYC" boasts really annoy me, especially when they are foundless or based on NYC myopia). H&M is all over the friggin place. They're even in suburban malls in Jersey, fer cryin out loud.

H&M looks pretty much like Target to me (yes I've shopped there, even in Europe), but it may be be cooler than Pittsburgh, I don't know. If time is tight, I would skip Sephora, it's just cosmetics and has an online web site with free shipping.

J - Lindsay (the poster) is the Pennsylvanian. "traveller" is the "only in NY"er.

I was not directing Lindsay to get out of Manhattan, I was telling traveller to do so.

I think that a lot of out of towners don't realize that shopping in NY doens't necessarily mean purchasing things. That is only part of it. A walk down 5th Ave is nice. I would, in addition to the advice you got, walk around SOHO where much is affordable and some is just window shopping. SOHO is the newer trendier place with things you wouldn't find elsewhere as well as some medium and high end NY staples. For example, if you want to just look around check out the supposedly amazing new Prada flagship store- http://news.magiconline.com/newsmagi...il.jsp?id=5084

I think your daughters will definitely like the selections at H&M...last year the H&M at the Palisades Center Mall in West Nyack, NY had a 1/2 off the 1/2 price sale right before Christmas and through the end of the year...don't know if the 5th Avenue branch will do the same...you might also like the street vendors who sell Kate Spade knockoffs and the like.

Take them to 8th street, between 6th and 5th avenues for a long long block of trendy (but relatively inexpensive ) shoe stores.
Then continue east another block or so to Broadway and just keep walking south/downtown. This is NYU country so ther are lots of fun stores to look at . They might enjoy Ricky's, sort of a mini chain of drugstores that has its own inexpensive makeup line and is also the place to ogle long pink wigs! Once you get to Broadway at Houston street, things change a little--Soho has lots of expensive stores and galleries, but also lots of chain stores (Gap, Eddie Bauer, H&M too, I think, etc) that you can see anywhere. Ignore those if you want and just look at the great cast iron buildings, stop in at Dean & Deluca to see how expensive fruits and vegetables can be, drop by Kate's Paperie for gorgeous wrapping and craft papers and all sorts of great gift ideas (but if price is an issue, you can buy much of the stuff at Pearl Paint, a huge 5 floor art supply and more store a few blocks south at Canal Street).
Continue down Broadway from Houston to Canal and stop at Peal River Emporium, a multi level "chinese department store" for all sorts of fun stuff (though, gain, some of the stuff can be bought cheaper at smaller Chinatown shops nearby). Then you're right at Canal street to buy all sorts of cheap tourist stuff (6 for $10 good quality I Love NY t-shirts) knockoffs, if you're into that, eat, and go back to the hotel!

Don't be cheap! Teach your daughters to buy quality not quantity. Take them to Iceberg on Madison Ave. as well as Ralph Lauren Polo sportwear. Then go to SoHo- There is an abundance of young hip designers and collections there. I love Marc Jacobs. If you must go cheaper, take them to lower Broadway. There are lots of stores with cheap knockoffs of designer styles.

Do not miss Sehora!! It may be "only" cosmetics but WHAT cosmetics. It's a destination for my teenage daughter and their own brand of cosmetics is very reasonable.
