I was thinking about surprising my husband with a trip to Hawaii for his 40th. Possibily Maui, Kauai or Waikiki.

We would only be there a short time, from October 25 Friday until November 2 Saturday. We will be flying out of Detroit, so it will take about 11 hours to get there.

Is this trip worth it for only a short stay?

Also, which luxury resorts would you suggest?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

OK - this may now take the top spot on my list of worst headers!

Susan, I surprised my husband with a Kauai trip for his 40th in January. We flew from the west coast so only 6 hours. I think the the trip is definitely worth it, especially if you are staying in a hotel with no need to plan dinners, shop, etc. My only advice is stick think about Maui- specifically a Wailea resort or a resort on the Kohala Coast on the Big Island. (Lots to choose from there.) We hit a rainy week (easy to do on Kauai) and while we got out and around and love Kauai, I was envious of those who chose the Big Island, the only spot where the sun shone that week.

Hi Susan: I think that the Four Seasons or the Kea Lani on Maui would be very special and romantic as well. Even though it sounds like a long haul to get there, I would definitely go. In my opinion, Oahu is on the bottom of my list because it so commercial, but if you do decide to go, the Kahala Mandarin is the spot. Kauai is definitely beautiful, but you will probably have windy, possibly rainy conditions in November. The Kea Lani might your best bet in November, because it sits on the drier side of the island. Yes the trip is worth it.
Especially if you're stuck in the upper midwest and the gray days of fall are already upon you.
Best resorts are Four Seasons Maui, Kea Lani Maui, Four Seasons Big Island, Hyatt and Princeville resorts Kauia, Mandarin Oriental and Halekulani Oahu.
Which one might best suit your tastes depends upon...well...your tastes, about which you made no mention.

Sounds like an OUTSTANDING idea though for a 40th surprise!!
