Suggestions for Great Hot Dogs in Boston
I have good friends visiting me in D.C. and they are on the way to Boston. They are looking for recommendations for good hot dog places in Beantown. They are going to be in Salem the first few days, then in downtown Boston. Preferably a good walk-in place, less on the commercial side, where they might be able to sit and chow. Anyone have any recommendations for them?
Thanks in advance, emd

The regional fave brand in the Boston area is called Pearl, which you can buy at most Stop n Shops, if you had a place to cook them yourself.
There are places that serve Pearl dogs, such as the Appleton Bakery in the South End.
There's a great thread at chowhound about Chicago-style dogs in Boston, and I can't do any better than that: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/show/155302
As they say, however, Boston's not really a hot dog town. Now, ask about a good lobster roll, and we can cover you.

i love the dogs from the carts outside Fenway park. Had them for the first time about 20 years ago.
When my daughter wanted to attend college in Boston, my first thought was "now we can have those great hot dogs again"!

Thanks everyone. My husband went to school around Boston and didn't have comments on this one, so I figured it might not be a real strong "dog" town. But will check out the Chowhound posting and relay the other info to my friends before they head out today. Thanks so much for the replies.
