Forgot to mention the name - the Stacia Leigh; ironically they got an influx of very large tourists one day, and it actually sunk.

How about the underwater hotel near Key Largo: www.jul.com/

I've also seen articles about fire lookout towers throughout the west, as well as lighthouses, icehotels, etc. This site may be of interest: www.oddinns.com

How about the Saugerties Light House in the middle of the Hudson River? We did it two years ago, and it was fabulous. Reservations required almost a year in advance for the two rooms. check it out at www.saugertieslighthouse.com

There is a place in Key West called the Secret Garden--a sort of rustic cabin in the woods with large screened in porch. The owner has spent more than 25 years planting unusual trees, etc on a one acre lot. It does have AC and there is a 2 night minimum.

The Madonna Inn, San Luis Obispo, CA. Truly strange, outrageous rooms and you need reservations years in advance. God only knows why.

When I was researching a trip to New Orleans, I came across a B & B that had cabins in a swamp where you could feed alligators from your front porch.

I thought it sounded really fun, but my husband didn't.

The Retreat at Artesian Lakes in Texas is fun - you get your own little cabin on a lake with a nice porch. The surrounding waters are full of alligators. When we went on our porch, one would always see us and swim across the lake and look up at us waiting for us to feed it. Kind of freaky but apparently no accidents in 25 years.
