Still not sure about the Doubletree Guest Suites in Times Square ---- help needed!

There have been several posts on the Doubletree Guest Suites in Times Square, but I still feel unsure if it's a good choice for us. What attracts me is the idea of two rooms for the price of one, since our family group will have four people on some nights of our stay. The location is also good for our purposes, since we'll be using Penn Station a fair amount and also plan to go to the theater at least once. I'd welcome any more comments on the hotel. Specifically, I'm wondering how separate the two rooms are. If the light is on in one room, does it shine into the second room? How's the breakfast at the hotel? And how spacious is the room? Some say it's small but Zagat comments on how large it is. Is street noise a problem or is there good soundproofing? Any and all help appreciated!

Seeing that rooms in NYC are going for $85 on priceline, why not bid for two rooms in Midtown West? I wouldn't base my stay on the proximity to Penn Station as you can take a subway, cab, bus, or walk there.

Rarely are suite properties really "two rooms for the price of one." For starters, you have one bathroom. Also, the "suite" sometimes isn't much bigger than a large hotel room. It's just been subdivided to give you the "suite" appearance. The possibility of extra privacy is great, I guess, but I don't think these all-suite places are all that.

I've stayed there. There are 2 rooms with a door between them. The living area(not huge but not cramped) has a sofa bed, the bedroom is, again, not large but bigger than many rooms I've had in NYC. The bathroom is pretty spacious and opens from both the living room and the bedroom.
The hotel is smack in the middle of the Times Square area, across from the TKTS booth. I don't remember any noise problem.
My only objection to the hotel's location is that when you walk out the door you're immediately thrust into a crowd of people. However, for your needs I think it should be just fine.

At the bookstore, if you go to the travel section, there are some books on NY city that have the square footage of all the rooms in alot of hotels in Times Square. It might have been called the unofficial quide to NYC,but I'm not sure. It is in the very back of the book. Also, the Doubletree does know the sq. footage of their rooms and if they're not telling you, theres a reason. You will be fine there if you're expectations are of a regular sized room partitioned in two. I was dissappointed because I expected a traditional size Doubletree or Embassy suite. The rooms are completely seperate. Location was great. Hotel boring-no ambiance. No one in the bar.If you are only sleeping there it will be fine. Street noise was not a problem.

Miranda,

We were contemplating staying at the Doubletree in June. I inquired about the square footage of the rooms. Here is the reply the Doubletree sent me by email:

"The deluxe suites containing one king bed in the bedroom are 442 square feet and the deluxe suites with two double beds in the bedroom are 489 square feet. *Please note that these suites do not overlook Times Square."

"The hotel does offer suites with king beds only that overlook Times Square. The square footage on this type suite is 410 square feet."

Unlike other Doubletree Suites and Embassy Suites, there is not a free breakfast here. Only if you are a HHonors member (Gold or better). I also found out that the rooms start on the 8th floor which supposedly helps with the noise factor. Hope this helps you decide.
