spring break

Does anyone have a good idea for a spring break vacation for 2 adults and 3 kids (ages 14-8). We're thinking of Arizona (grand canyon, Phoenix, etc.) but wondering what the weather in the grand canyon is at end of March. Otherwise, looking for a warm weather (not Florida) destination (we live in Ohio). thanks.

The Canyon is at a high elevation and will be cold. There is a very strong possibility of snow.

We took a similar trip in late March several years ago and it turned out to be a great time to visit the Grand Canyon. While it is true that high country weather can be unpredictable, it is definitely springtime and playing the odds, you should be okay. You can always set up a "Plan B" that would route you into more of a desert southwest experience "just in case". I'm betting you will be able to pull it off. The reward is very light traffic and having spectacular vistas just about to yourself at that time of year.

Our strategy was to grab a cheap charter into Las Vegas and then rent a car. Here are my notes from that trip:

We did quite a bit of ranging and put around 1,500 miles on the car. It's a great spring break plan to investigate.

JIM ABOVE HAS A GREAT IDEA. We headed for the Grand Canyon for Spring Break at the end of March 3 years ago, we made it to Flagstaff AZ where we got caught in a blizzard! However, the weatherman said "while it's snowing like gangbusters in the Flagstaff area (they got 14 inches of snow), it's a balmy 70 degrees in Phoenix. We loaded up the next day drove 100 miles to Phoenix on the way saw Montezuma's Castle and went into the Cochise Mountains, then headed into NM to Alamagordo, White Sands and Roswell, where we spent the night in alien territory and visited the National UFO museum, drove on to Carlsbad Caverns and into Mexico then home. I don't recommend Juarez, Mexico at all. We still haven't seen the canyon but someday, just not at spring break. The drive across country was alot of fun.

i think pheonix is a very dull city unless you golf or all you want to do is lay by a pool. i wouldn't plan on spending much time there.
how about san diego with a side trip to palm springs/joshua national park.

We went to the Tucson area in April two years ago. Some days it rained/snowed; others it was warm enough to swim. We stayed at a great inn (Skywatcher's Inn) with its own astronomy set-up --- our kids loved, stayed in Bisbee, and then near Tucson (Sheraton).
However, our best spring break vacation was to Costa Rica. Our kids still talk about it.
