Small Theater in Los Angeles
While you may have heard about the big theaters in Los Angeles, such as the Shubert in Century City or the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion downtown, there are also dozens of smaller theaters (under 99 seats) offering diverse, cutting-edge productions. These plays’ themes range from family fare to the kind of stuff that won’t ever be playing in Middle America. Ticket prices are pretty reasonable – ranging from $12 to $25. Unless you go on opening or closing nights, you can usually get in without making reservations or waiting in line.
While I have been to many theaters in Los Angeles, I have two favorites:
The Sacred Fools Theater located just off Melrose in East Hollywood. Hilarious, usually raunchy plays here. www.Sacredfools.org
The City Garage tucked in an alleyway behind the 3rd street promenade in Santa Monica. Totally bizarre European plays here, under the fanatically-driven direction of Frederique Michel, from France. www.citygarage.org
There is a free weekly paper called the LA Weekly, available in newsracks that has, tucked in among the ads for plastic surgeons and escort services, the most extensive theater listings in LA.
While other tourists will be standing in line for two hours to see a gameshow taping, you could be seeing a future Oscar winner performing her heart out just a few feet away from where you are sitting.

I don't want to get into the argument about whether this is advertising, but the 99 seat theatres in LA(they are this size to avoid some of the restrictions by the unions--particularly required salaries) offer some of the best theatre I have seen. A couple of years ago I saw a production of Marvin's Room, starring Mary Steenbergen and Jean Smart. It was before the movie was made with Meryl Streep, and believe me the play with the cast I saw from a front row in an intimate theatre was a most memorable evening!! I think the tickets were about $20 each and we bought them 3 or 4 days before the show at the theatre on Sunset near La Cienega. I agree with Robert, take advantage of this unique theatre experience!! Those theatres are part of the reason I'm staying in LA for a full month later this summer. I plan to see a lot!
