Secluded getaway

Does anyone have any suggestions for a weekend getaway that would be secluded? Is there somewhere that you can really feel like you're the only person within 10 miles? Many of the cabins, etc that I find end up being right next to others.

Any particular area you would like to visit? Check www.vrbo as a good starting point.

How about some basic information like where you are, how far you want to go, whether you have budget and time limitations (other than "long weekend"), whether you want to stay close to home, fly, train it, or drive, and just how "secluded" you want to be.

I can think of a number of secluded places you could go, but they might not be appropriate depending on where you are now.

I'm in Texas, but I don't mind flying (as long as it's in the US). Time limitations would be 3 or 4 nights max. Budget would be under $1000 for lodging. Thoughts?

I can recommend a fabulous place, but it is _really_ isolated. You can get there easily by car from an airport in probably 1.5 hours, but no cell phone, no land phone, no Blackberry, no television (dvd's only) owing to mountains. No shopping. Nearest grocery 35 minutes +/-. No restaurants. Is this what you had in mind?

Yes, somewhere where my Blackberry doesn't work, where I can get away from the business stuff would be great. Away from city life, where you can actually see the stars at night, where the only sound is nature.

Try the North Georgia Mountains especially a place called Black Bear Cabin Rentals. (www.blackbearcabinrentals.com)
We just returned from our 5th year of staying in one of their cabins, and it was great. No, the cabins aren't 10 miles from each other, but their not on top of each other, either. They only manage cabins that are a distance from another cabin. Most of the time, you cannot see another cabin from your porch or deck. You will come back feeling so relaxed.

Are you limited to the US? Anegada (a British Virgin Island)offers cabins that while not 10 miles away (the island is not that long) sure offers places where you can feel alone.

Also try houses/cabins in Old Timberline, Davis, West Virginia. Gorgeous scenery, great hiking, places not on top of one another.

Check out:

Renting a cabin in Old Timberline (a gated community but cabins are not on top of each other) called Blackwater 15/Alpine Sunrise (sits on 5 acres). No, I don't own it but know where it is - fantastic location. Sits on the conservancy in front of the lake and faces the mountains across the lake. There is a path in front of it that goes around the lake. Will be glad to tell you more about Old Timberline, etc. if you are interested. You can access the back side of Dolly Sods from Old Timberline.
To see this cabin, Goto http://www.ridgeviewtechnologies.com/trr/ Scroll down and click on Old Timberline Rentals, click on Blackwater 15/Alpine Sunrise.
To see more of it, click on Additional Photos area. On the page that pops up, hold mouse over different areas of floor plan and you can see pictures of each section.

I like this kind of "get away" too.

You can try Washington State PArks
www.parks.wa.gov

select vacation rentals

I recently flew into Portland OR, Avis car rental p/u drove the 1 or so (no rush hour traffic) hour drive along teh Oregon side of Columbia river, to Astoria. Stoped in Astoria at the Safeway, bought food, saw the great Maritime Museum and then drove across the 4 mile bridge, quick Left at the end to Fort Columbia having reserved the Stewards house in advance online for a very reasonable price with a full kitchen, 2 upstairs bedrooms and great views of the Columbia river. It does have a TV but you don't have to turn it on. Only drawback is no shower but a great old time claw foot tub and lots of stairs to the bedrooms upstairs... frankly I loved the solitude, deer at the front door, hikes around the Fort. There are houses nearby where some park employess live..but really,,no one bothered us at all.
You can drive up teh road a short distance and if you have a 4 whel drive can drive right onto the beach at Long Beach...

Oregon also has cabins and yurts
www.oregon.gov

Try these books too:

Cabins and Cottages of California Tom & MArtha Thompson
Northern California Off the Beaten PAth MArk R. Williams

Pls let me know if you find somethin: I am overdue for some peace and quiet..
