SC Upcountry trip, what not to miss?
My DH and DS are spending July 1-7 at the Old Indian Boy Scout Camp in Travelers Rest. I'm planning a trip for my 10yrDD and I for the same area. I have found several small homes on VRBO.com that look like they will work.
My DD and I would enjoy hiking, falls, rafting, horsebackriding, etc. Where should we stay? I'm, trying to narrow my seach for accomodations. I can only see my son every 3 days so we dont need to beright outside the Old Indian property.
I did find a cabin in Landrum and even Travelers Rest. But as I look at Upcontry maps, it seems like there are 'nature' sites for us to explore NW of that area.
Any recommendations? What town to stay in? I am searching lots of sites for info but always value opinions here. Thank you

Landrum is a good little way from Traveler's Rest. Table Rock State Park is a nice area. You'll be there over a major holiday so the parks may be crowded.
Greenville is a nice town and with the University there, there is a lot to do "inside".
Are you going to visit your son at camp? We were really not allowed to (not a scout camp) when our boys went, except on Sunday--and they were there for several weeks. Just a thought.
Have you thought about you and DD going some place entirely different, like further north into the NC mountains around Brevard--Pisgah Forest?

Gretchen, you are correct, we can only see the boys on Wed night of their Sun-Sat stay.
We are driving from South FL, so I didn't really consider going further North. Last March my family enjoyed a week in Townsend outside of Great Smokie Mountain National Park and loved hiking, falls, horses. We live at the beach in So FL so mountains appeal.
What areas should I look at?

Two days away from departure! South Carolina Upcountry, here we come!!!
I'm still open for ideas. I an looking at rafting too. Also found a 3hr horseback riding waterfall tour.
Found a Concert by the Lake on the Furman campus Thurs night
Found a street festival in Greenville for Friday night.
I'm still studying up on the parks/falls/hikes.
Hoping to enjoy peaches. Found a local u-pick orchard too.
What else do you recommend?

Downtown Greenville is one of the great urban success stories. Lots of restaurants and plenty of people watching. Check out minor league baseball as well.
If you want a day in the car, SC 11 is a designated scenic highway that sometimes isn't, but you can take it to Walhalla and then go up into the mountains on SC 28. If you go left at the junction with SC 107, Highlands, NC has upscale shopping and food in a lovely mountain location. If you go right and up 107, the Oconee State Park is a pleasant stop, there is a fascinating US Fish Hatchery (trout) just before the NC border, and you eventually wind up in Cashiers, also upscale. This could of course be a loop: Walhalla-Highlands-Cashiers-Walhalla.
In Walhalla at lunch time? Eat at the Steak House Cafeteria (it's on Main Street but unobtrusive; ask locally). It is run by a family of Jordanian Christian Arabs who introduced garlic to fried chicken, a marriage made in heaven. Otherwise standard southern vegetables and sides like mac and cheese. Cheap.

Thanks:
some areas of interest and names that keep coming up are Devils Fork, Twin Falls, Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area, Table Rock. What can you tell me about these?
Thank you so much for additional suggestions.

I think you can get useful information -- pictures, too -- on these faster if you just look them up in Wikipedia.
I can tell you that Devil's Fork is located on Lake Jocassee, which is an artificial lake used to cool the Oconee Nuclear Power Station.

Yesterday we explored along Scenic Hyw 11 to Ceasar's Head and Table Rock. Also got to Wildcat Branch Falls.
Still considering Biltmore. Today may hit Jones Gap, Cambells Covered Bridge and Paris Mnt before Greenville Fireworks.
Hoping to book a horseback ride, no luck yet.
Mising anything?

Yes.....................we are stopping at Perdue Fruit Farm on Hyway 11 today. Thanks.
Jones Gap State Park was full to capacity today so we are enjoying horses at Dogwood Terrace. My daughter is in heaven grooming horses.
Still might head to Biltmore today.
