Sandwich or Falmouth
Flying into Manchester (car rentals are cheaper) Spending 5 days Northern Ma. Driving to either Sandwich or Falmouth area for 2 days. Which do you recommend? Wanted to see little of the Cape.

Sandwich is upper/inner cape and Falmouth is lower cape. I would base in Falmouth and drive along 6A to Provincetown. From either you can see the whole cape. From Falmouth can get to ferries over to Nantucket and Marthas Vineyard, if you want to do a day trip there.

It's a long way from Falmouth to 6A. 6A starts in Sandwich. It is a nice ride if you like old sea captain's houses, art galleries and shops. Falmouth has so much more water around it. West Falmouth is charming and the drive from Sippewisset to Woods Hole is lovely. They are very different towns.

I think Falmouth. It is my favorite town on the Cape. You can take the ferry to Marthas Vineyard or just stay in Falmouth. Woods Hole is interesting to poke around, Falmouth Heights has beautiful beaches. Go about 20-25 min. to walk the Cape Cod Canal, that is a must!! Or rent bikes and bike it. I just prefer Falmouth over Sandwich. If you like shopping, go to the Christmas Tree Shop!

Sandwich would be my vote. You can walk or bike along the canal, no motorized vehicles allowed on the service road along the canal. Pick it up off the parking place west of the Marina in Sndwich. There are a little playground and picnic tables near this lot. There are several conservation areas with intersting trails.
There are also museums:
the Glass Museum with displays of Sandwich Glass and glassblowing demonstrations
Heritage Plantation with a collection of old cars, a carousel, and lovely trails. Concerts from time to time.
Thornton Burgess Museum (he was a Sandwich native son)
Concerts on Wednesday evenings at the gazebo at the school
The Benjamin Nye and Wing Fort House, both of which date back to the 1600's
the Greenbriar Nature Center. Walking trails and an old fashioned way of making jams, jellies and relishes--demonstrations and delicious smells--in the main house
Walk across the boardwalk to the dunes at sunset or sunrise.
Go down to the canal at sunrise and watch the working fishing boats unload.
Take the train to Buzzards Bay and/or Hyannis, narrated ride through woods, near the marshes and cranberry bogs.
As someone earlier mentioned drive down Rte 6A to where it joins Rte 6 and continues on to Provincetown. You'll see old captains' houses, lots of little shops, cranberry bogs( which will be in harvest mode by end of September to early October),
meadows with vistas out to sea, woodland areas, marshes and lots more.

Falmouth is not the lower cape. Lower cape is Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro & Provincetown. I've never stayed in Falmouth or Sandwich but we LOVE Wellfleet. If you get that far, go to Wellfleet center and Harbor. There is a great restaurant, Bookstore Restaurant, across the street from Mayo Beach, with outdoor dining overlooking the beach. Great food and prices! Great stop for lunch.
National Seashore Beaches are beautiful - stop at Coast Guard Beach, Cahoon Hollow, Head of the Meadow, Race Point and Herring Cove.

Sandwich is at the very beginning of Cape Cod. The old village center is charming and the rest of Sandwich is basically residential. Sandwich makes a great day-trip from Boston but it is not, IMO, a convenient base if you want to visit the rest of Cape Cod. It is close enough to Woodshole (30-40 minutes) to take a ferry to MV and to Falmouth, a commercial center, to shop.
If you are looking for more natural surroundings, with broad sandy beaches backed by dunes, smaller quant villages with less traffic and commercial activity, then Kwoo has the right idea....head for the outer cape from Eastham to Provincetown where you will find plenty of open space as well as boutique shopping, galleries, fine dining and beaches galore! The Salt Pond Visitor's Center in Eastham is a good place to start if you want to get a feeling for the area, history, culture and free tours. Eastham is conveniently located to most places on the Cape....30 minutes to Provincetown and Hyannis (ferries to MV and Nantucket), 10 minutes to Wellfleet, 20 minutes to Chatham, and 45 minutes from Sandwich.
