San Antonio

Going to San Antonio end of February. Stayin at Marriott Riverwalk. How far from airport? Any cheap ways of getting to hotel? Other than Alamo, anything else to do?

You will be staying right on the number one attraction in San Antonio . . the Riverwalk. It's full of resturants, pubs and shops and people watching spots. There is a get on . . get off trolly (sorta) that will drive you around San Antonio. . it is almost free and a good way to get the lay of the land. One of the stops is El Mercado, a big market with mostly Mexican imports that can be interesting if you like that.

The Alamo is smaller than you probably expect, you can see it and do the tour in less than an hour. There are other places to get off also. San Antonio has many missions other than the Alamo which are lesser known and very interesting. The zoo is one of the best in the country.

I expect that Marriot runs a shuttle back and forth to the airport but don't know. . they should be able to confirm. Otherwise, taxis are reasonable.

Weather in February should be really good.

Hope this is helpful . . Rich

We love history, and we really enjoyed doing the "Mission Trail" in San Antonio. This is the round trip of the other four missions besides the Alamo. Start at San Jose because the visitors' center is there, and work your way around. You WILL need a car to do this, though.

If you have kids in your group, Sea World and Fiesta Texas will be a must. The younger ones might also like the Hertzberg Circus Museum downtown.

Another good diversion is a trip into the Hill Country for shopping and eating. Our favorite towns are Gruene, Fredricksburg and Boerne.

Have fun!

Before you tour the Alamo make sure and see the IMAX movie first. The IMAX is located directly across from the Alamo and is well worth the time and money. Otherwise the Alamo will seem like--just another mission, I'm afraid.

It's been quite a few years since we lived in TX and regularly visited the San Antonio area. But I remembered a neat park (Breckenridge?) that included a zoo, Japanese tea gardens, and horseback riding. Don't know if it's still there, but we thoroughly enjoyed it.

We've stayed at the Marriott Riverwalk several times and it was great! The recommendations for the trolley shouldn't be passed up. It was inexpensive to buy a ticket and get on and off the trolley bus to multiple areas in the city. We think San Ant. is one of the most romantic cities in the US! Make sure to take the boat ride at nite - real "kitchy" but fun.

What? No one mentioned the restaurants along the River Walk..and the shopping. I don't think Sea World is open until March, is it? Double check that...The Marriott does NOT offer courtesy transportation..take a taxi . How many days are you staying? It is a great walking city--but you'll have to stay ont he main sidewalks..a diversion on the wrong street and you won't live to tell about it.....

Carol, It's Brackenridge Park, and yes, it's still there. The San Antonio Zoo is one of the largest in the U.S.

Be sure to check one of the weather sites before you leave home.--Went to SA couple of years ago first week of Feb. Arrived in airport to hear warning of "ice storm" and overhead freeways were closed. (shuttle to hotel just used surface streets)
However, for the next 3 days were freezing, I mean 29, 30, 32. then it warmed up to 40s.Week after we got home their temps were in 70s!!!!
Good luck.

You must be going to the IBC? I was trying to get a room at the Riverwalk but they are booked solid at that time!

Places to eat include Rosarios for lunch or dinner, Boudros or biga for dinner. Check out a spurs game, visit the tower of americas for great views of the city, or enjoy a cigar at the Havana. For something special, if the weather permits, try setting up a dinner on a riverbarge through the marriott.Quarry golf course is half way from the airport to downtown on your left.. great course. Botanical gardens 10 minutes from your hotel if interested. Good luck and enjoy san antonio.

I just returned from San Antonio, I paid $15.00 from the airport to the hotel on the riverwalk. Don't take the airport shuttle we waited and waited and finally got a refund and took a taxi. The riverwalk is so much fun!!

If you are renting a car and are into shopping, there are two large outlet malls not far from SA. One in New Braunfels (30 minutes away) and one in San Marcos (bigger, about 45 min.). Both are very easy access right of interstate 35. Reportedly these are some of the main tourist attractions in central texas.

The end of Feb. weather will be likely in the 60's- 70's. However, just a few years ago, it ws 99 degrees on Feb. 28th. Last year I think it was more like 60 degrees. So anything is possible!

San Antonio is GREAT. Hope you have a wonderful time. See La Villita (sp?) and El Mercado. I can't remember the name of the cathedral that is the geographic "center" of SA but it's worth going to. Greatgolf all around. King William district is beautiful. Definitely do IMAX and the boat tour (silly but fun).
