Romantic Getaway

Does anyone have a suggestion for a romantic getaway within 3 hours of the NYC/NJ area? Looking for something like the Mohonk Mountain House but with fewer kids around. Good restaurants, no shopping, plenty of outdoor activities.

Is that three hours driving or three hours flying?

My husband and I love the Reluctant Panther in Manchester VT. It is about 3 hours, but a beautiful drive. No children are allowed, plenty of activites year round and lots of great dining. We always saty in the suite that has a fire place in the bathroom and one in the bedroom...I forgot the name of it. Also an amasing 3 course breakfast is included. One of my favoirte restaurants there is the Black Swan...just great (I think it was lalso a feature restaurant in Bon Appetit magazine). The Reluctant Panther is in the heart of the very quaint and beautiful town of Manchester. There is shopping but is not near the hotel, but it is not "mall type shopping"...more upscale and in a village type setting. If you are interested www.reluctantpanther.com

There's kayaking on Shelter Island, in the Hamptons (Wainscott) and I'm sure in Montauk. Obviously fishing too.

B/c LI is pretty flat, don't know if the hiking would interest you but there are plenty of trails.

Sounds like maybe nw Ct. or the Berkshires or New Hope Pa. would be of more interest to you. If you do a text search for weekend getaways from NYC you'll find lots of interesting older posts with almost the same request. Here are 2

And then this 2 yr. old post was interesting

On a MUCH smaller scale than Mohonk, a place I've never been to but have wanted to is the Boulders Inn on Lake Waramaug (Litchfield CT area). About 2-3 hours out of the city
How about you try it and let me know?

Saranac Lake Club and Inn, in Saranac Lake, NY. About 3 hours from NYC. In the middle of the Adirondack Mountains, on a quiet street, this inn is IT - they do it right. Each room has a tempurpedic mattress (try it, you'll like it), fine towels and linens, and very very comfortable. The owners and staff go out of their way to make your stay delightful - from their gourmet breakfasts and big selection of coffee, tea, and baked goods, computer/internet access on site if needed, cookies and sweets left outside your room each night, the whole inn is plush and comfortable but not at all stuffy or un-touchable - just warm and cozy, and romantic, too. And of course, you have the Adirondacks - no shortage of outdoor activities there. The staff at the Inn will help you select day hikes, boating trips, and direct you to any other activities you may be interested in. Highly recommend.
