Ackislander and dwdvagamundo mention the Georgia sea island.
There is a short ferry journey from a point just off I95 which takes you to Sapelo island. Sapelo is home to one of the few remaining isolated Gullah communities. They own the island and offer camping options, the island is undeveloped and has very good wildlife.

Since you want a one way car rental consider this:
See Orlando and then ride one of the two Amtrak trains (Silver Service) overnight all the way to New York. Between New York and Washington, ((Philadelphia, Baltimore etc.) you do not need or want a car. Take the train or Megabus. Leaving Washington, then rent a car and camping equipment for your coastal adventure. Camping in the National Seashore on Cape Hatteras is fun. be sure to see the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. They moved it a few years ago to save it from the Atlantic Ocean.

Charleston is a perfect antidote to all things Disney. After that he should treat you to a four star hotel and a massage.
I love Edisto too, very much. But it's 50 miles from there to Charleston. Keep that in mind as you make your plans. I have friends that live there year round. There are no hotels, and

Ae you coming in summer? Camping can be not fun if you have mosquitoes. Some of the biggest ones I've ever seen were on the Outer Banks.

Unhappy memories.
We were on the verge of missing the ferry back to the mainland whilst on Cape Lookout. Missing the boat wasn't an option. We took a short cut through marsh land and were so badly bitten that I had to have operations on two bites on our return to the UK.

The title says 3 weeks, I know. BUT.....
Just want to point out that the OP has ONLY 3 days to fill between Orlando and DC. Might hone in on that time limit--many of us are just suggesting Charleston and then hit it out for DC on the 3rd day of driving (8 hours).

To comment on the Georgia / SC leg:
-In GA: St. Simon's Island, Jekyll Island, and of course, goes without saying, don't miss Savannah.
-In SC: Goes without saying Charleston, and don't miss Beaufort. Love Beaufort, it has tons of charm and history. A few movies have been filmed there as well.
Have fun!
