Road trip from Lexington, KY to Annapolis, MD. With a 10 yr. old.
I am a bit overwhelmed. I am from CA, and my 10 yr. old is doing a choir tour in WV that ends in Lexington, KY. I thought I would meet him there, rent a car, and drive to my friend's house in Annapolis. I have not seen much of that part of the country. We don't need to go direct, and we can take as much time as we want to. I would love this to be an interesting trip for my son, and a bonding experience for us. If you have any suggestions, I would love that. I will be picking him up on Tuesday, July 1, 2014. Thanks! Caroline

If he likes horses, the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington will be fun for your son.
Lexington is about 40 miles from Harrodsburg which has a replica of Fort Harrod built in 1774 by James Harrod as a defense against the Indians. Your son should like it; he can climb around on the inner walls and see typical log cabins. (KY became a state in 1792.)

I'm going to suggest that you check out Roadside America (www.roadsideamerica.com) to find quirky places to visit on your trip. Last summer, I made a trip across the U.S. with my grown daughter and she mapped the route using Roadside America. We played glow-in-the-dark minigolf in Virginia, had a miniature train deliver our dinner in Little Rock and saw both Foamhenge (Virginia) and the Cadillac Ranch (Texas). I think any 10-year-old (and his mom) would love the fun places you can find on Roadside America.
