Restaurant suggestions for Nashville & St. Louis

Where do you like to eat? My husband and I will be in both cities for a couple of days and are hoping for suggestions. We like all types of food but prefer restaurants unique to the area. Would like to stay under $100 on the higher end for two but that is negotiable and also don't mind spending much less. We don't need gourmet or fancy just good. Thanks for any help.

I have never had a bad meal at Trattoria Marcella at 3600 Watson Road in St. Louis!

St. Louis institutions -- Blueberry Hill in the Loop http://www.blueberryhill.com/ and Crown Candy Kitchen http://crowncandykitchen.net/ -- also can't miss Ted Drewes for frozen custard! http://www.teddrewes.com/

There are a lot of good places to eat in Nashville, but do check out the Loveless Cafe on the west side of the city. They have fabulous breakfast and great fried chicken for dinner -

Loveless is a classic for Southern food. There will be a wait and it's a ways out of town. Not saying don't go - just be fully informed.

Some higher-end favorites in Nashville:
- Husk just opened here - branch of the Charleston restaurant. If you want to go, make reservations soon. husknashville.com
- Rolf & Daughters - opened last fall, I think. Delicious. Especially the bomboloni.
- Lockeland Table in East Nashville - I've been once and am going back tonight. Local, seasonal food, nice vibe.
- Margot in East Nashville. Helped start the gentrification on the east side and still delicious.

City House is supposed to be fantastic but I haven't been yet. If you really want to splurge, Catbird Seat.

There's honestly not that much to note in the tourist district - there's fine food, but nothing terribly exciting. Germantown (just north of downtown) has good places, Husk is just south of downtown, and East Nashville restaurants are about ten minutes away. Some other independent local favorites, often with locally sourced food:
- Burger Up www.burger-up.com
- Fido www.bongojava.com/fido-cafe/
- Marche (owned by the same chef as Margot - awesome for weekend brunch) www.marcheartisanfoods.com
- Baja Burrito www.bajaburrito.com
- Calypso Cafe www.calypsocafe.com
- Sweet 16th Bakery (breakfast sandwiches = amazing!) www.sweet16th.com
- DeSano Pizza www.desanopizza.it
- Las Paletas (Mexican popsicles; there's a store on 12th Ave South, or they're sold at Fido, Hot & Cold (next to Fido), and Baja Burrito)

Pancake Pantry is another classic. There will be long lines on the weekends and they're not known for friendly service, but the pancakes are pretty amazing.

also -- http://harveststlouis.com/ Harvest -- local, fresh -- a little out of the way just outside Clayton city limits, but well worth it!

For St Louis:

Pappy's BBQ - downtown - was voted best BBQ in the US.

in Clayton - Pomme Restaurant and Pomme Café - very popular places to eat and always a great meal.

Scape in the Central WEst end - Chef creates wonderful things and has a great outdoor patio.

I agree with ALL of the recommendations from DianeGermaine too!

There is a new restaurant at the St Louis Art Museum called Panorama - getting great reviews!

Make sure you spend some time at Forest Park. There are wonderful restaurants in addition to the Free zoo and museums. There are often times great festivals there too!

Nashville's Edley's Barbecue in the 12South area is my favorite Nashville BBQ. 12South has Imogene and Willie's denim tailor a very cool shop. Good area to wander.

Back from our quick trip to St. Louis and Nashville and wanted to follow-up.

St. Louis:

Good burgers & a pitcher of Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat at Blueberry Hill. A very interesting place and just down the street from our hotel. Breakfast the next morning at City Coffeehouse and Creperie before heading to Nashville.

On our return to St. Louis, it was a very warm afternoon, but we decided to stretch our legs in Forest Park. We parked near the Boathouse so we could check it out, then up to the World's Fair Pavilion, continued toward the zoo and ended up cooling off for awhile at the St. Louis Art Museum. I love this park and want to come back during a cooler time and rent bicycles.

Trattoria Marcella was our stop for dinner and exceeded our expectations. The lasagna was delicious!

Foolishly (because we were already stuffed) we headed to Ted Drewes for dessert. First time for husband although I've been there several times. Lucked out since there was no line. Great custard as usual but we couldn't move after all the great food!

Couldn't fit in Pappy's BBQ on this trip. Hope to make it there next time as well as Crown Candy Kitchen.

Nashville:

We arrived in Nashville mid-afternoon and spent a good bit of time walking around. We strolled down Broadway and over to the river. I am not used to humidity so after about an hour of exploring I just wanted a cool place to sit down. We dropped into Puckett's where I probably drank 5 glasses of sweet tea before ordering a couple of appetizers. The waitress was very sweet and kept refilling my glass.

We were up early the next morning in order to beat the heat and headed out to The Hermitage: The Home of Andrew Jackson. A very good stop. We spent several hours here just walking & exploring the grounds.

Marche Artisan Foods was our lunch stop. My husband loved the shrimp & grits. My lunch had to be remade due to a quality issue. It was very good once it arrived the second time but the waiter seemed a little unconcerned when I initially pointed out the issue. He later apologized.

Popsicles for dessert!! Waited in a short line at Las Paletas for our watermelon and strawberry popsicles. Cute neighborhood, very tasty and worth the drive.

Walked off our lunch at the Country Music Hall of Fame. I'm not a country music fan but I really enjoyed the museum.

Cocktails and appetizers at the Oak Bar which was only OK.

The Loveless Cafe has been on my list for years, but we just couldn't fit it in on this trip. Still on my to do list as well as several of the other restaurant suggestions.

Thank you again for the wonderful suggestions!

I'm glad you had a great time, wtm! You hit some good spots. Strange about Marche - I've never had a dish there that wasn't done well, but glad they got it taken care of.
