Most interstates are pretty boring.
From Portland, aim for Concord NH. Your choice could be to do south on I95 to Portsmouth, then Rt 16 to Rt 4.
On Sunday, we got off I95 in Biddeford ME, went thru Rochester NH and eventually Rt 4. Not much to see since it's mostly rural.
From Portland, you can also head over to Alton NH via Rt 202
or, most scenic, go Portland to Conway NH, south on Rt 16 to Tamworth then west to Sandwich, drop down to Moultonborough on Lake Winnipesaukee then Meredith where you have to say goodbye to lake and get on I93 S to Concord.
From Concord, most scenic to go south on Main St then west on Pleasant Street then thru towns of Hopkinton and Contoocook. In Contoocook, turn left on Rt 127 to head west and connect to Rt 202. Keep going to Keene NH. Then Brattleboro VT over Hogback Mountain to Bennington then Albany and Schenectady NY area. It would be fast and still scenic if you go south on I93 to I89 then west to Rt 202 to Keene.
From Portsmouth NH/I95 you can continue south to connect with Rt 101 west to Manchester NH. I think Rt 101 is very boring - a limited access hwy but once you get past Nashua it's very nice and will take your through the Monadnock area (past Yankee Magazine) to Keene NH.
I really hate I90 in MA so it's not worth the little time you save going google maps' suggested fastest route.
The route to Conway is the longest but would be really nice but also expect traffic in downtown Meredith.

A few days ago I drove from State College, Pa to Portland, across NY and Vermont and New Hampshire, mostly on Route 9. All good but tomorrow I would like a different route home to Pa, possibly across MA on a smaller road than 90, to connect with 88 around Schenectady. Would 202 across MA work?

It would be 202 and Rt 2. I've only driven it by mistake but it's fine.
I would also consider the northern route from Portland to Hanover NH to Woodstock VT and Rt 4 across VT then south in NY to Schenectady. Woodstock is popular tourist town but not large. Most of VT is scenic although Rutland is a little gritty.
