Please recommend Italian restaurant in NYC for four 16 year old girls.

Can you recommend an Italian restaurant for 4 sixteen year old girls in NYC for this coming Friday? It will be a birthday celebration and they are interested in décor and appearance of the restaurant. These girls are picky eaters and will probably order penne vodka or a steak or chicken dish, so I’m looking for very good food but not necessarily great food with an interesting menu.

We have a car and are willing to drive to other boroughs if necessary.

Our daughter loves Roberto’s in Arthur Avenue. If you could recommend a restaurant like that but with a more impressive décor and one that takes reservation, that would be extremely helpful.

I was going take them out for dessert separately. Any suggestions for dessert (with emphasis on chocolate) will also be helpful.

Thank you.

This should fit the bill. These ladies are developing good taste already (Roberto's is my favorite as well...especially if you follow their lead with the specials!)

Roberto's Trattoria Zero Otto Nove might be just the ticket: http://www.roberto089.com/index_089.html

For dessert, nearby Egidio Pastry Shop is quite a treat: http://nymag.com/listings/stores/egidio_pastry_shop/

Probably my favorite Italian in the city is Quarto Gati on the East Side just east of 3rd Ave I think on 81st or 82nd. GREAT food, and excellent service and very nice atmosphere.

The young women might like Peasant (last time I was there, Natalie Portman was there too) very good LES place that according to open table is available 12/11, not cheap but very cool; or perhaps Crispo on w. 14th street, really lively mix of young people and good food at reasonable prices, fun atmosphere; or maybe uptown - really midtown, at Mia Dona, pricier but good food by Donatella Arpaia;

Or amybe the Parkside in Queens
Or Al Di La in Brooklyn.

We took my son and his friends to Carmine's and a show (Spamalot), for his 14th birthday. Carmine's was fun for the kids.

Ooops. Hit the wrong key and it posted.

I was saying, When I saw the title I was about to suggest Carmine's too, but reading the post, I'd say this is definitley NOT a Carmine's group. Seems they are more sophisticated and looking for a more "grown up" and "special" dining event than typical hungry teens.

For chocolate I would suggest Max Brenner.

They have multiple locations in NYC (I prefer Union Square) and some fun chocolate desserts and drinks.

There is only one location of Max Brenner in NYC now at Union Square, the location in the East Village is closed. Non-discriminating teen girls I know love it.

You group might also like Sweetiepie if they want a sort of Princess-fairy- hit-with-a-pink-stick atmosphere: http://www.sweetiepierestaurant.com/
or at the other end of the spectrum, maybe they would like the achingly hip chikalicious

Very near Max Brenners and the Strand is a whole personal pie pizza place that is a branch of a restaurant in Rome that my niece insisted on going to after her summer in Italy and we all enjoyed both places (and The Strand of course) very much.

Now if only I could think of the Restaurant's name - it's on 12th or 13th just West of Broadway.

Sue-Is it Piola's?

I would take them to Veniero's for desert. It is low cost with excellent quality. And across the street is De Robwertis which is not as good but has their orginal tin roof and makes very good cannoli.

Max Brenner is one stop above a mall type chocolate shop.

A place near there were the chef s from Rome is Cacio e Pepe. The name is the signature Romano dish.

I agree with Adu that Cacio e Pepe might be a good choice, but, if the OP's suggestion that the teens are interested in the decor of the place is taken into consideration, I would recommend the more upscale Trattoria dell'Arte (Seventh betw. 56th and 57th). Aside from the very good food and service, and its great antipasto bar, the place is a stereotypical high-energy New York restaurant. It's noted for its "body part" sculptures, including a huge plaster nose in a second floor window facing Seventh, and for nose-based artwork (and other art) throughout the dining rooms. Yes, most probably it's Piola - there's always scaffolding around it . . I've heard it's not bad, but not as good as motorino or Co.

Sometines I think you should give sixteen year olds what they need not what they want. (I am stealing from Walter Cronkite.)
