Plantation by Charleston/Beaufort in one day?
Hi all-
I'm wondering if you think it is possible to enjoy one plantation around Charleston and Beaufort in one day- half a day for the plantation/the second half and evening to Beaufort and spending the night around Beaufort. We were hoping to spend the day in historic Charleston, but be it the last day of the Spoleto festival, we figured we would avoid the crowds by spending the day that way and then heading to historic Charleston the next day. Any thoughts?

I think that would be a wonderful day! The two plantations closest to Beaufort--and, I think, the two most enjoyable--are either Middleton Plantation or Magnolia Gardens. Both are beautiful, but I prefer Magnolia. Close by to both of these is The Glass Onion, a wonderful, reasonably-priced Low Country/New Orleans style restaurant that does a fantastic lunch (see www.ilovetheglassonion.com). Beaufort is only about an hour and forty-five minutes away, and I agree with suewoo, it's a very pretty drive, so there would be plenty of time to enjoy yourselves!

Thank you both for your advice! I am thinking we will probably go to Middleton, although am open to suggestions. How much time should we plan to spend there? A couple hours, 4-5 hours, or longer? The night before, we would like to stay near Georgetown or somewhere north/northeast of the plantation, but within striking distance, and drive there in the morning. I wonder if the drive to the plantation, plantation, and Beaufort may be really packing it in that day, so was wondering how much time at the plantation would be good.

Where are you driving from? I think you should stay in West Ashley. You'll be nearer Middleton. And the time will depend on how much you want to do. Check out their website. I think 3 hours is plenty, especially if it's hot.

So our plan is to spend some time in Georgetown and then stay near Georgetown or somewhere slightly closer to Charleston that evening. I was hoping to then drive to the plantation the next morning from our hotel (hopefully not more than 1.5 hrs away). West Ashley is a little too far for us to make it down to the night before.

There is nothing between G'town and Mt Pleasant, so you may want to pick one of the hotels there on the Santee-Cooper. It will take a little longer than that to get out to Middleton in morning traffic. People will be using 17 to go to work from Mt Pleasant so factor that in too.
