I wouldn't describe the Gaylor as "being stuck!" There are LOTS of restaurants in that area as it's just north of the DFW airport. Ask the concierge for recommendations. You should visit the historic Grapevine downtown also.

The reason I say stuck is that

a) stayed at the Gaylords in other locations and the food is very expensive. Since I don't have an expense acct as a hard working nurse I'd like some inexpensive suggestions..
as noted in my posting

b)the conference association chooses the hotels..I don't so I am stuck with the arrangements

c) Having stayed at the Gaylords before I know from experience the Hotel staff do not like to recommend outside dining..

I'd prefer any Dallas locals recs

So if anyone in the area has a nice suggestion

I actually live in Grapevine, so here's advice from a local! The food at the Texan IS wonderful, but I agree it is also expensive.

Grapevine Mills Mall is just a mile to the left out of the front gate of the Texan. There are Bennigan's, Steak & Shake, Ritzy's, Rain Forest Cafe, Golden Corral, Chik-Fil-a, Cozymel's (Mexican) and Love & War in Texas (steaks and Mexican) right around the mall. Inside the mall, there are Rainforest Cafe, Corner Bakery and a large food court. (The "cajun" place at the food court does good plate lunch specials.)

If you go to the right out of the Texan, you'll come to Grapevine. There are MANY choices here! Down to the right on Main Street are several local favorites: Esparza's Mexican, The Back Porch, and Wilhoite's. The Tap Inn is a bar that also has really good food.

Along Northwest, there are Dickey's BBQ, and several smaller, local Italian and Mexican places...I can't remember the names. Further down the road on the right, there is a Walgreen's, and further down on the left, there is a Tom Thumb grocery store, which is the closest one.

If you turn left off Northwest onto Ball Street and follow it for a while, it will change names to William D. Tate Avenue. (He's the mayor.) This will lead you to a HUGE group of chain restaurants at the intersection of 114. CA Pizza Kitchen, TGI Fridays, Don Pablo's, Carrabba's, Boston's, Buffalo Wild Wings, Boston Market, Denny's, Hooter's, El Fenix (yuck), Spring Creek BBQ, Olive Garden, Joe's Crab Shack, and Saltgrass. LOTS to choose from here!

Unfortunately, we have no Chinese buffet in town. Yes, I know, it shocks me, too.

Have a great time!

You could run down the street to the edge of Grapevine and Southlake and eat at Pei Wei. Reasonable prices and really good. If you are not familiar with the chain, it is the little sibling of PF Chang's.
Not 'fast food' at all... I am eating it right this minute, as a matter of fact
Another good place that gives you a ton of food for less than 10.00 is Cafe Express. I get a salad and PILE on the free extras at the bar.
It is located in Southlake Town Center, just down 114 from Grapevine.
Christie, what is the best way to get to Southlake Blvd for Pei Wei and STC?
I work in Southlake and know how to get around but I don't know street names!

From the Texan, turn left and take Northwest until it dead-ends into Southlake Blvd. Turn right on it, and follow this until you get to Carroll Ave. Turn right, and you're at the Southlake Town Center. Besides Pei Wei, there is a Rockfish, Po Melvin's (YUMMY New Orleans homestlye food), Cheesecake Factory, Cafe Express, and several other places. Oh, and the BEST ice cream place, Milwaukee Joe's.

In the restaurant row at 114 and William D. Tate, there are also a PF Chang's, Macaroni Grill, Chili's, La Madeleine and several fast food places. On WDT, there is the Silver Fox steakhouse, but it is NOT inexpensive...

Ohhhh.., Po Melvin's is good? I have often wondered!
I really love Rockfish. Last week I had an ahi steak on ciabatta bread. It was awesome. The ahi salad is great, too!
We go to Christina's a lot for a cheap, big Mexican meal.
I have no clue what exit it is, but it is like 2 exits down from my office on Kirkwood @ 114.
As you can see, the Grapevine/Southlake area is just jam packed with restaurant possibilities.
You could head to Sam's Club and eat a bunch of samples at lunch. We have actually done just that... sort of by accident... the first time anyway

No problem. Have a great trip!

Oh yeah, Po Melvin's is very good! Their New Orleans style meatloaf and brown gravy is BETTER than my mother's!!
