Place in Manhattan to hold surprise anniv. party; about 30 people.

I've been strong-armed, er, uh, agreed to help someone plan a surprise anniversary party for friends in NYC the first Sunday in December. My main job is to find a venue. (It's NYC because they live there, as do a lot of the potential attendees.)

I'm thinking we'll have about 30 people, rough count, and there will be some sort of meal in the early afternoon. It could be a restaurant that has some kind of private room, or any other place that fills the bill. Doesn't have to be super fancy, just nice. As a vague figure, we're thinking we'd spend about $100-$150 per person for the meal. I have no idea if that's high, low, or just right.

Would appreciate your recs and ideas. TY

I've been to a Fodors GTG here:

They have a really nice room that would probably work for your group. Good food and excellent service.

Jing Fong in Chinatown has huge parties and smaller party rooms. Sunday afternoon is a huge dim sum day, so I do not know.

The Oyster Bar in Grand Central is a big space you can call them and see if they can accommodate you.

Steak houses usually are large enough for that size group-Strip House is good.

Gnocco in the East Village.

North end Grill

Taverna Kyclades East Village

Red Cat

If I think of others, I will pass them along

We eat at Babbo quite often. Although it is famous, the prices are actually on par with some of the lesser Italian places in the area.

I've never hosted a private party, but just present this as an option....looks like the price is well within your limit; also look at the sister restaurants, Lupa, Otto, and La Sirena:

For my own party I would probably choose Chinese, perhaps from one of the venues mentioned by IMD, above...but you really need to go down there and discuss in detail the menu before you commit..

Your projected price point is quite adequate. Just go on Trip Advisor , NYC restaurants. But,first, you should have an idea of WHERE in the city you want that restaurant: Midtown, East Side, West Side, Greenwich Village etc. ???

Enjoy your party!

For various reasons it almost certainly will be in Midtown if possible.
