Park around NYC or take the train into the city from Oakton VA
I appreciate the info I got with my previous question. Our plans have changed slightly. We will be driving from ATL to Oakton , VA to visit friends who I forgot had moved. We will then drive on to NYC. We want to drive and Metropark in New Jersey. We will then drive back directly to ATL. The train has been too expensive, but there was a suggestion that we drive to another station that is south of where we are going and the fares are 120 round trip through the end of June. There will be 2 of us. Does that make sense since it will put us and furher south on the way home? I have a feeling that to drive to NYC and return form the DC area and leave our car, the price differential might not be that much and the convenience may be better. Not coming from an area of tolls, I am a little befuddled.
You guys are always such a great help. My DH never questions anything I find out on this board. You guys never let us down.
Thanks

We can take the train form Washington, Dc to Penn station for $408 plus the cost of leaving the car in DC which I have no idea how much that is. How much will it cost us in tolls to get to Metropark in NJ roundtrip. We can figure out the cost of the gas, but we have no idea about the tolls.
thanks

It will be more expensive to park a car in DC than in Metropark. I guess this depends on when you're traveling. If you are coming into NYC on a Friday and leaving on Sunday, I'd definitely do the train to avoid hellish summer weekend traffic. If you're doing it on a Tuesday and leaving Thursday, I'd drive.
There's at least $20 or $25 in tolls between NYC and DC depending on the route. But it's probably less than $20 if you go to Metropark since you can avoid some of the NJ Turnpike and the expensive bridges and tunnels into the city (Though the cost of NJ Transit overrides that ... and you save a bundle on parking in Metropark instead of Manhattan.)
