Outer Banks in May?

My husband and I are planning a trip to the Outer Banks May 15-20. We've never been before and are wondering about the weather that time of year: wind, temp ... how about crowds?

We've heard that Oracoke is a good area ... not too developed. We're hoping to do some casual biking, hiking and need some shopping/restaurants nearby.

Would appreciate any feedback.
Thanks!

Often have vacationed at Topsail Island in SE North Carolina in mid May. Water temp is usually 65-70. Air temp will vary depending on what kind of weather front slips on by. Could be 85 and sunny all week. However, it could be 65, overcast and rainy for much of your week. I've had it both ways. Oracoke is a quaint, historic small town type island - getting there by Ferry is nice . Visit old graveyards with old markings. I think one is called British Cemetary. It is a walking town.
