Orlando rollercoasters: Hulk v. Rock n Roll coaster

We are heading to Orlando soon, and will visit Disney's MGM Studios. My son loves roller coasters, and is looking forward to the Aerosmith Rock and Roll rollercoaster. He is insisting I go on it with him. (I think he's trying to get rid of me so I stop bugging him about homework).

I like roller coasters, but cannot do inversions b/c they make me dizzy. (I can't spin, but can do ups and downs in a "traditional" roller coaster).

I went on the Hulk at Universal and had to lie down afterwards! (Only for a minute or two, but that "threw me for a loop" literally!

If you've been on both coasters - if I survived the Hulk, will I be OK on the Rock and Roll? Or is my son really trying to kill me?

Yes, you'll survive and maybe even love it. I can happily ride Rockin' Rollercoaster 3-4 times a day. A couple of years ago I took D to Universal. We had front of the line access. I rode the Hulk exactly once. It made me hurt. Over the course of two days, D probably rode it 8 times and I'd just wait for her.

Make sure you get to MGM before rope drop and go right to RNR. (Last time they picked us out as the first family of the day to ride RNR and we got to walk through the closed park and ride the ride by ourselves...sweet!)

I agree, you'll be ok on the RNR. I think it has two small loops, but the ride is very smooth. I loved it and could ride it over and over again.

The Hulk was ok, but much rougher than RNR. I was ok after the first time, and later in the day we rode again. Going on one more time immediately after the second time (my daughter's idea) I was done - my back couldn't take any more.

Because you are mostly in the dark on RNR, you don't notice that you are going upside down as much as you would on an outdoor looping coaster. RNR is very smooth, and the loops go by very quickly. Think back to the first double looping coasters and how small those loops were compared to newer coasters. RNR's loops are like those early double loop coasters.

The RnR coaster is SOOOOOO much milder than the Hulk that you can't even put them in the same category. The ride is shorte on RnR, and as stated, it's inside and dark so you don't get the same feeling. It's a much smoother ride than the Hulk. That said..I prefer the Hulk!

Thanks, all. I am feeling better! When I said inversions, I think I more accurately meant corkscrews. Are there a lot of those on the rock 'n roll coaster?

Glad you all enjoyed it!

The Aerosmith Coaster starts off with a loop. And does at least one corkscrew.

As as aside, if you're looking for a sitdown meal, the Hollywood Brown Derby can be really good. Plus they serve alcohol, which it sounds like you might need.

One big, BIG warning - the Toy Story Ride is now among Disney's top attractions. Regular line will hit over an hour very quickly after opening. You might consider heading to the park when it opens and immediately getting FP for that ride, then head over to Rock & Roller Coaster/Tower of Terror.

Ryan, thanks for the info.

Is the new toy story ride the same as the Buzz Light Year ride in the Magic Kingdom? That Buzz Lightyear ride was one of my sons’ favorites.

karens, same basic idea, but I thought it was more fun than Buzz Lightyear (and I like Buzz!).

The Toy Story ride is a virtual reality arcade. Similar concept in that you're firing at something. But, here's is a series of arcade games. Quite fun, actually.

For what it's worth, I also have problems with roller coasters and going upside down. I made the mistake of riding the Hulk coaster at Universal and will never again ride that.

The Rock-n-Roller-Coaster is different. I had no problems with it despite the loops. Not sure if it's because it's all indoors so the ride is smoother (and in the dark) or what, but I was able to ride it twice in one visit. I had more problems with the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (and yet still went back and rode it again).

For some of us, that attraction Disney calls a roller coaster is NOT one....in fact, notice that Disney (with the exception of the REAL one at California Adventure) has ENDEAVORED not to have any sort of OVERT coaster anywhere...Space Mountain is COVERED as is the Rockin'...even the original Matterhorn Bobsleds was 'disguised' with that wonderful paper mache peak...

NOW, if your kid asks you to ride with him on the TOWER OF TERROR......hmmmmm

But Dukey, that's what differentiates Disney and makes their coasters popular. They aren't just selling the thrill, they are selling the experience.

As a "coaster" Everest is a bit above average. But, as a ride it's great - especially for kids. They are providing the experience and something different.

Six Flags near me has lots of coasters. Zero ambiance and all you're left with is a long wait and a ride. The lead-up to Everest, Rock-N-Roller Coaster, Space Mountain, et al creates an experience beyond just the two minute thrill.

I will now send Disney my bill for doing PR work for them.

Doug - I rode the Hulk with my eyes closed, so maybe being in the dark won't be so different for me

FYI, Disney's MGM Studios is now Disney Hollywood Studios. Just to avoid any confusion.

Hi all - wanted to thank you again for all your replies.

I rode the Aerosmith coaster - and loved it! I'm really glad I went on it, it was fun.

Ryan - thanks for the tip to ride Toy Story first. We got in line about 9:10 (park opened at 9) and the wait was already about 30 mins.

We really enjoyed Hollywood Studios - I think b/c everything was new to us. My boys had never been there, and my husband and I had visited before they had all the rides (Tower of Terror, rollercoaster, etc). The rides were great.

We visited last Sat. - I heard on Wed. Disney had record crowds. Glad we were gone well before that! We saw all the big rides (and the car stunt show) before 2:30pm - so my kids opted to go to Wet n Wild for the rest of the day (they give half price passes after 3pm). It was a great day for them.
