On Big Island, worth going to Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden?

In May will spend only (sigh) 3 days on the Big Island of Hawaii at the Four Seasons Hualalai which is near the Kona Airport. The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, apparently, is way over on the other side of the Island near Hilo Airport. Is it worth renting a car and driving there? How long is the drive? My husband and I are maniacs for gardens. Would appreciate advice and opinions from those who know.

We went to the Big Island last year and did not visit the Botanical Gardens. The BI is huge - about the size of Connecticut. Hilo is directly opposite from Kona, so it's a very long drive, I'd guess at least 10-12 hours round trip. Not something I would want to do on vacation. The resorts along the Kohala coast all have beautifuully landscaped grounds and historic fish ponds, etc. Since you will only be there 3 days enjoy the great resorts. Mauna Lani , Waikaloa, Mauna Kea, etc. The helicopter ride over Kileuia(sp) is great if the volcano is active.
Aloha and Enjoy.
