Hi G. See the discussion I started entitled, "Ilikai on Waikiki Beach, Aston Circle Across From Beach...??!!.."
Also, if you do a search here on hotels and Waikiki or Hawaii you should find a lot more info.
One hotel I suggest looking into is the New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel:
http://kaimana.com
If the location of this hotel appeals to you but it is too expensive, look into the possiblity of a condo. in that area.
Are you determined to stay in a hotel in Waikiki? I found some oceanfront home rentals which look very appealing in the Kailua/Lanikai area which is supposed to be around 25 minutes from Waikiki. Kailua and Lanikai beaches have been rated the top in the U.S. and they have beautiful views of little islands offshore. Check-out the accomodations listings on the official Hawaii Convention and Visitor's Bureau website, http://gohawaii.com
The site which had the rentals I recall in Kailua and Lanikai is http://www.allerstorfer.com/
I noticed in another post you asked about needing a car in Waikiki and other things to see on Oahu. O`ahu has an extensive bus system so you can get by without a car and in some ways it can be an advantage to do so because parking can be a problem. On the other hand, of course, a car gives you the independence of doing what you want exactly when you want. I have seen different opinions here about whether or not it is best to rent a car on Oahu.
There are many things to see and do on Oahu outside of Waikiki. One article I suggest is at:
http://www.frommers.com/vacations/of...dest/od1c.html
The Oahu visitor's bureau website is:
http://www.visit-oahu.com/aloha.htm
I suggest you get some Hawaii travel books.
Best wishes for a great trip and don't forget to post a trip-report.
Aloha
P.S.: How many cats do you have?

G,
One of the best deals in Waikiki is to get the Entertainment Card for $30 at entertainment.com (the Hawaii edition), then use that to get half-price room at Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach or Outrigger Reef on the Beach. A fabulous deal, and you'll have all the other coupons included in the book with the card to save you money on lots of other things! Best of luck! (You should be able to keep that room rate around $100 or less, doing it that way.)
